The ruined courtyard of the old temple shakes beneath their feet.
Stone cracks. Lanterns swing wildly from splintered beams. Wind screams through the open arches in sharp, laughing bursts that don’t sound natural.
It sounds amused.
“There!” Katara shouts, pointing upward.
The jinn spins through the air like a ribbon of smoke and sunlight—its body shifting between mist and flame and water and dust so quickly it hurts to track. One second it’s a grinning monkey with ember-bright eyes, the next a serpent made of storm clouds, then a blur of glittering blue fire.
And it laughs.
A high, taunting cackle that echoes off the temple walls.
“Oh, I am so done with spirits,” Sokka snaps, ducking as a bucket of icy water appears over his head and dumps down in one violent splash.
Toph barks out a laugh. “Nice one, Snoozles.”
“Not helping!”
Aang leaps into the air on his glider, eyes narrowed. “It’s heading for the roof!”
Zuko thrusts both hands forward, a jet of fire streaking upward—
—but the jinn twists midair and vanishes.
Zuko’s flames explode harmlessly into stone.
Then the spirit reappears directly behind him.
“Oh no—” Katara starts.
Too late.
A burst of powder explodes in Zuko’s face.
He coughs violently, stumbling back as bright pink smoke curls around his head.
Toph snorts.
Katara bites down hard on her lip.
Sokka wheezes.
Aang blinks.
Zuko’s hair—usually tied in its rigid prince’s topknot—has exploded into enormous fluffy curls.
For one awful beat, there is silence.
Then Suki loses it.
“I can’t breathe—!” she laughs, nearly falling over. “Zuko! Your hair!”
“WHAT?!” Zuko barks.
Sokka doubles over laughing. “You look like a cabbage-poodle!”
Zuko’s face goes scarlet. “I WILL KILL IT.”
The jinn shrieks with delighted laughter and zips across the courtyard again.
“Focus!” Aang shouts, though he's biting back a smile of whatever chaos that's going on.
Katara raises her arms, water surging from the shattered fountain in twin whips. Aang sends a gust of air to herd it down. Toph slams stone pillars upward to box it in. Suki launches a fan-blade. Zuko blasts fire across the opening.
For one brief second—
They have it.
The jinn freezes in the center of the trap.
The spirit claps its hands.
Sokka’s now dry.
Zuko’s hair is back to it’s sleek look.
Everything went back to normal.
Or so they thought
Its glowing eyes widen.
“Oh, no,” Aang whispers.
Then it grins.
The world splits open.
A vortex tears through the center of the courtyard—a spiraling maw of blue-black light and screaming wind.
Katara’s eyes widen.
“What is THAT?!”
The pull hits instantly.
Toph digs her heels into stone. “It’s sucking us in!”
Sokka grabs a pillar. “Why is it always vortexes?!”
Katara slams frozen water into the ground to anchor herself—but the force yanks harder.
“Katara!” Aang cries, diving for her.
Too late.
The jinn shoots forward and seizes her wrist with burning-cold fingers.
Katara gasps.
Then both of them are ripped screaming into the vortex.
“Katara!”
Aang lunges.
Zuko lunges harder.
Neither catches her.
The vortex snaps shut.
Silence.
The courtyard falls still.
Aang hits the stone on his knees.
Sokka stares.
Suki covers her mouth.
Even Toph says nothing.
Zuko’s chest heaves as he stands frozen, one hand still outstretched toward empty air.
Gone.
Katara is gone.
Then—
CRACK.
The air splits again.
Everyone jerks up.
Another vortex tears open above the courtyard.
Something comes out.
A woman.
She lands hard in a crouch, palms skidding over stone.
Water Tribe blue flashes—
—but not quite.
Her parka is sleeker, cut with crimson and gold trim.
Her sleeves are embroidered with flame motifs.
Her hair is looped in familiar braids adorned with gold.
And pinned near her temple—
a gleaming Fire Lady crest.
She looks up wildly.
Blue eyes frantic.
Then they land on Zuko.
Her whole face changes.
Relief.
“Zuko!”
Before anyone can react, she runs.
Straight at him.
Zuko barely has time to blink before she throws her arms around his neck and kisses him.
Hard.
Not hesitant.
Not confused.
A desperate, fierce kiss like she thinks she’s lost him.
Zuko makes a strangled sound of pure shock.
Sokka chokes.
Aang freezes.
Suki’s eyes widen.
Toph’s mouth drops open to the thundering heartbeats she's sensing.
The woman pulls back just enough to breathe—
“You idiot,” she whispers, and keeps kissing his face while clutching his collar. “You could’ve —”
She stops.
Because no one is moving.
No one is speaking.
Her eyes flick to Aang.
Then Sokka.
Then Suki.
Then Toph.
Then back to Zuko.
Zuko’s hands are still half-raised in pure shock when he sees Aang’s face. Immediately his arms shoot up in surrender, palms out. “I didn’t touch her, I swear!” he blurts, voice cracking in a way the Fire Lord hasn’t done since he was sixteen.
“Katara!” Aang’s voice is sharp with something between fear and jealousy. He lunges forward, wrapping an arm around her waist and tugging her back against him possessively.
She stiffens instantly. “Ugh—hey! What’s going on? Why are you being so—” She twists out of his grip with a waterbender’s fluid grace and steps away, brow furrowed in genuine confusion. “Too close, Aang.”
Without thinking, she moves straight to Zuko again, pressing close enough that their arms brush. Zuko doesn’t back away. He just stands there, rigid, golden eyes locked on Aang in silent confusion, but his hands stay carefully at his sides. He doesn’t touch her. Not while the entire room feels like it’s one breath away from exploding.
Suki’s the first to find her voice, fans already half-deployed. “That’s… not Katara.”
Aang’s eyes widen, the jealousy flickering into something rawer. “Who are you?!”
The interdimensional Katara’s head snaps toward the voices, then to the familiar-unfamiliar faces surrounding her—Sokka’s stunned expression, Suki’s wary stance. Then Toph slams her foot down, sending a small ripple through the stone floor.
“She is Katara,” Toph says flatly, arms crossed, blind eyes somehow still cutting through the mess. “Just… different.”
Katara (the one who doesn’t belong here) turns slowly, really looking at them now. At her brother’s older, broader face. At the old and ruined temple courtyard.
“Where am I?” she asks, voice quieter now, the adrenaline fading into dawning unease. “Where are we?”
They can all see the subtle differences. She carries a radiance their Katara never quite possesses. A little more color in her cheeks, a confident set to her shoulders that comes from years of standing openly at a Fire Lord’s side instead of the Avatar’s. The Fire Lady pin in her hair catches the light like a dare.
Zuko stares at this Katara. At the striking fusion outfit, the deep crimson and sapphire waves, and then at the heavy betrothal necklace resting against her collarbone: a beautiful piece in swirling shades of blue, red, and purple that clearly blends both nations’ styles.
Aang tries to steady himself. “Ok. Let’s just reconvene, go back home and figure this out.”
She offers Aang a small, automatic smile—the kind she’s given him a thousand times in her own world when things got complicated.
Then she freezes.
Home.
Her smile falters and dies.
She turns, eyes finding Zuko first, then flicking to Sokka like she’s searching for an anchor that isn’t there.
Zuko’s legs actually buckle. He drops heavily onto the nearest bench, palms dragging down his face as a strangled “Oh boy…” escapes him. For a long moment he just sits there, breathing hard.
Then he lifts his head, gaze dragging up to her again—to the unmistakable Fire Lady pin gleaming in her dark hair, to the betrothal necklace that screams she belongs to someone else in her timeline, but that someone is clearly him.
The silence stretches, thick and electric.
Sokka finally finds his words, voice pitching high. “Okay. Somebody explain to me why my sister just kissed the Fire Lord, why she’s dressed like a walking peace treaty, and why she’s looking at Aang like he’s a stranger who got too handsy!”
Katara (interdimensional) swallows, fingers brushing her pendant almost protectively. “This… isn’t my world, is it?”
Zuko lets out a short, broken laugh that sounds more like a cough. His eyes never leave hers. “No. It’s not.”
She tries to steady her breathing, but the words tumble out sharp and defensive, she raises her hand, brow knotted tight. “Wait, home where, Aang?”
Aang’s voice stays soft, pleading. “Our home, Katara. The Southern Air Temple… or the Southern Water Tribe… whichever you prefer.”
Katara’s eyes flash. She looks straight at Zuko first—his gaze hasn’t left her for a second—then sweeps across the rest of the group, voice almost a whisper but unwavering. “But... the Fire Nation is my home...”
The words hang heavy. Her voice cracks just slightly at the end, eyes glistening as the full weight threatens to pull her under.
In this world, home means going back with Aang. To the house they probably share. To the children they probably have. To the life where she chooses the Avatar.
She’s about to shake, about to let the tears spill—but before she can, Suki steps in smoothly, hands raised.
“Okay, okay… why don’t Toph go with you to the Fire Nation?”
“What? No!” Aang demands, stepping forward.
Sokka throws a hand out to stop him. Suki shoots Aang a wide-eyed warning look.
“Toph will make sure nothing goes wrong.”
“That’s right,” Toph says, grin widening, suddenly far more curious than concerned. “I’ll go with her—whether you want me there or not.”
Zuko stands up slowly, shoulders squared but resigned, clearly accepting that he has to be the one to take this Katara “home.”
Then it hits her.
“Lu Ten… Spirits.. Lu Ten!” Katara gasps, clapping a hand over her mouth, eyes wide.
Zuko freezes. “My cousin? Lu Ten is alive in your world?”
Katara meets his gaze, fierce even through the shock.
“Zuko… Lu Ten is the name of our son. We named him after your cousin.”
Pure shock hit him like a blow to the chest. For a long, terrible second he can’t speak, can’t move. The Fire Lord who faced down armies looks utterly undone by four simple words.
“Okay! Okay!” Sokka throws both arms up and down in a frantic cross, voice pitching high. “You three—go! Aang, come with me.”
“No, I’m not leaving without Katara!”
Aang insists, reaching for her again.
Katara jerks back, eyes blazing with fire. “I am not your Katara!”
The space goes dead silent, everyone is shocked by the raw, outspoken force of her words.
She doesn’t wait for a response. She turns on her heel and strides toward the exit like she already knows exactly where “home” is—fusion robes swirling with every determined step.
Zuko’s head follows her direction then glances at Aang—half apology, half in helpless resignation. Suki waves him off urgently.
“Go after her.”
Zuko hesitates.
“Go!” Suki insists.
Toph falls into step beside him, smirking as she guides him out.
“Come on, lover boy. Looks like we’re in for a rough awakening.”
⋆⁺₊⋆⊱❀ ༻¨*:·. ★ ·:*¨༺ ❀⊰⋆⁺₊⋆
At the royal carriage, Zuko sits across from her. Katara stares out the window at the passing Earth Kingdom landscape, jaw tight, arms crossed. Zuko watches her openly—conflicted, curious, aching—but what keeps pulling his gaze is the golden Fire Lady pin still gleaming proudly in her hair.
“Katara,” he says gently.
“What?” she snaps, irritated, turning to face him with that bold, no-filter glare.
“I… you need to remove your Fire Lady pin.”
“What?! Why?!”
“If they see you in my colors, wearing the pin… they’d think—” He falters, unable to finish. “If our Katara comes back… it wouldn’t look good for her.”
Toph snorts from where she’s sprawled beside her
“They’ll think you’re sleeping with him.”
Katara’s mouth falls open.
Toph shrugs.
“Or worse. That you’re mocking Fire Nation tradition. Everyone here knows our Katara is with Twinkletoes.”
Katara looks at Zuko, then down at her hands, the fight draining for just a moment. “Is there.. a Fire Lady in this world?”
“No.”
“Good.”
She reaches up to remove the pin and gives it to Zuko but he leans forward quickly and clasps her hand in his, stopping her.
His voice is low, steady, full of quiet weight. “No. Keep it. It belongs to you… in your world.”
Toph suddenly sits up.
“Actually…” she pauses, grinning. She knocks hard on the wooden panel instructing the coach, “Hard left!”
Zuko frowns. “What?”
“We are not taking emotional-disaster sugar queen 2.0 straight to the palace.”
Katara glares. “I am sitting right here, Toph.”
Toph ignores her.
“Take a detour.”
Zuko sighs. “Toph—”
“To the tea shop.”
⋆⁺₊⋆⊱❀ ༻¨*:·. ★ ·:*¨༺ ❀⊰⋆⁺₊⋆
It’s well past midnight when the carriage stops in front of the quiet little shop.
The lantern outside sways gently in the night breeze.
The painted sign creaks.
Zuko leads them through the back entrance.
The familiar scent of jasmine and roasted tea leaves wraps around Katara so suddenly it nearly knocks the breath from her lungs.
Memories.
Laughter.
Warmth.
Home.
A light clicks on.
And there he is.
Iroh stands in the doorway in a sleeping robe, blinking blearily.
Then he sees Katara.
His whole face lights up.
“Ah! Katara!”
She lets out a broken laugh and runs into his arms.
Iroh chuckles warmly as he hugs her back.
Then—
he pauses.
His eyes drift to her robes.
The crimson and sapphire silk.
The necklace.
Then slowly…
He looks at Zuko.
Zuko rubs the back of his neck.
“It’s… a long story, Uncle.”
Iroh’s brows rise.
His smile turns sly.
“Is there some play you are in that you are not telling me?”
Katara laughs.
“No.”
“Are you secretly married?”
“WHAT? No!” Zuko replies indignantly
Toph cackles.
Katara actually snorts.
Zuko groans.
“No! I mean—yes? Not me—well, me, but not me—”
Iroh lifts a hand.
“Ah. Multiverse.”
Zuko pinches the bridge of his nose.
“Uncle, she cant go back to the palace wearing this,” he gestures to her royal garments. "Can I borrow the black clothes I keep here forrrr….” He gives him a wink.
Iroh’s expression softens instantly.
“Oh.”
He nods.
“Yes. Of course.”
His voice gentles.
“I just washed them.”
Katara blinks.
“Your stealth clothes? Why are you letting me wear your blue spirit clothes, Zuko?
Zuko and Iroh’s eyes went wide? “Y—you know about the blue spirit? Did Aang tell you? In your world?” Zuko asks.
“What? No, I actually caught you sneaking in one night. I thought you were an assassin! I almost killed you if you didn't tell me it was you.” She huffs with a laugh at that memory.
Iroh and Zuko looks at this version of Katara with awe and wonder.
Toph smirks.
“I like this Katara.”
Zuko groans into his hands.
Iroh chuckles and shuffles toward the drawer.
Katara follows him.
He turns and studies her face.
Really studies her.
Then his gaze lowers to the necklace resting against her throat.
She touches the necklace.
And smiles.
They all settle in the back room with tea.
Zuko explains everything.
The jinn.
The vortex.
The switch.
The kiss.
At that, Iroh’s smile grows so wide Zuko wants to disappear.
“And…” Zuko finishes awkwardly, “apparently in her world…”
Katara’s fingers tighten around her cup.
She glances at Zuko.
Then back at Iroh.
“We’re married and have a son.”
Silence.
Iroh’s eyes soften.
“…You do?”
Katara nods.
A smile blooms despite everything.
“His name is Lu Ten.”
The cup in Iroh’s hands trembles.
Just slightly.
He stares at her.
At Zuko.
At the necklace.
She showed Iroh her Fire Lady pin.
His voice comes out barely above a whisper.
“You… named your child after my son?”
Katara nods.
Tears sting her eyes.
“It was his idea." She points to Zuko. "And I loved it.”
She looks at Zuko.
And smiles.
Zuko freezes under it.
His breath catches.
Iroh looks at him for a long moment.
Then laughs once—
soft and broken and full of love.
He wipes quickly at his eyes.
“I…” Zuko says thickly.
“I would have named him Lu Ten too… if I had a son.”
Katara places a hand over his then pushes to her feet so suddenly her tea sloshes over the rim.
“We have to find a way to fix this,” she says, pacing now. “To bring me back—and bring your Katara home.”
Her voice softens.
“I feel awful for Aang the way I treated him earlier. He must’ve been really hurt when he saw me—“ Katara looks at Zuko at her implied kisses.
Zuko shifts.
Katara’s brow furrows. “And I feel awful for my other self… if she gets there and Aang rebuffs her.”
Toph straightens.
“Why would Twinkletoes rebuff her?”
Katara freezes mid-step.
The room goes quiet.
And then she realizes—
She hasn’t told them.
She slowly turns.
“…Because he’s married to you, Toph.”
Silence.
A beat.
Then Zuko bursts into laughter.
Not his usual dry smirk.
Not even a chuckle.
A full-bodied, wheezing, Sokka-style laugh.
He nearly chokes on his tea.
Katara stares.
Then grins despite herself.
“That’s... different.”
Zuko wipes at his eyes, still laughing.
“Have you been spending too much time with my brother?” Katara asks, amused.
Toph shoots to her feet.
“Wait—hold on, Sugar Queen, back up.” She points wildly at herself. “I... I'M MARRIED TO AANG?!”
Katara nods, smug and proud of them.
Toph’s face twists in horror.
“Why would I marry him? I don’t even like him like that!”
Katara winces.
“Oh, yeah? Tell that to Toph in my world.”
Toph folds her arms.
“How bad is it?”
Katara lifts her hand.
“Three kids.”
Toph’s jaw drops.
Katara raises another finger.
“They’re expecting their fourth.”
Toph lets out a strangled noise.
“WHAT?!” she screeches. “Did Twinkletoes turn me into an airbending baby factory?! I refuse to accept this!”
Zuko nearly falls off the bench laughing.
Even Iroh coughs into his tea.
Katara laughs. “No, Toph!”
Toph glares.
Katara softens.
“It’s not like that at all.”
Toph crosses her arms tighter.
Katara smiles.
“You love him. And he loves you too. Fiercely. In my world.”
Toph goes still.
Katara continues gently.
“And you love the role.”
Toph’s nose wrinkles. “What role?”
Katara’s grin widens.
“Rebuilding the Air Nation.”
Toph groans.
Katara ignores her.
“You helped Aang rebuild all four Air Temples.”
Toph blinks.
“All four?”
Katara nods.
“You bark orders at the acolytes like a general.”
Zuko snorts.
“And especially at Aang’s fangirls.”
Toph recoils.
“His WHAT?”
Katara laughs harder now.
“The girls who chase him around and think they have a chance.”
Toph makes a disgusted face.
“I did not.”
“You absolutely did.”
Toph drops back on the bench.
“Nope. Not hearing this.”
Zuko leans back, folding his arms.
“Why?” he asks lightly.
Toph narrows her eyes.
“Afraid you might like it?”
Katara shoots Zuko a look.
He lifts both hands innocently.
Toph mutters darkly.
“I only helped him rebuild two temples here.”
Everyone looks at her. She stiffens.
“…And then I went back to the arena. I mean there’s nothing to do really, he’s got you and..” realization hits.
Katara’s smile softens. Toph goes quiet.
“How is he? Our Aang.” Iroh asks
“He… didn’t take it lightly, uncle.” Zuko says.
The room sobers.
Katara wraps her arms around herself. “That too,” she murmurs. “Your Aang here is… different.”
Zuko’s eyes lift.
Katara searches for the words.
“It’s like…”
She swallows.
“…like he never grew up.”
Silence.
“Something darker,” she says carefully. “Possessive. Demanding.”
Her voice lowers.
“Like he was when he was twelve.”
Iroh’s brows knit.
Toph’s voice is softer now.
“What’s he like in your world?” Toph asks almost a whisper.
Katara smiles.
The kind of smile that aches.
“In my world?”
She laughs quietly.
“He’s still playful. Still optimistic.”
Her eyes go distant.
The room falls quiet for a moment. Iroh sets his cup down with a soft clink, his expression thoughtful.
“He laughs more. It’s like… I don’t know how to put it. He seems more at peace, no matter what he encounters. I think maybe its because he knows he’s not alone? He doesn’t just have you, Toph—he has all of us. I can’t quite explain it.”
The room falls quiet for a moment. Iroh sets his cup down with a soft clink, his expression thoughtful.
“Ah,” he says gently, eyes crinkling with understanding. “That is the difference, isn’t it? In your world, the bonds between all of you stayed balanced. No one carried the weight of being the Avatar’s only anchor. Here… the friendship dynamics shifted early. Aang leaned so heavily on you, Katara that the rest of us became secondary. That kind of dependence can darken even the brightest spirit over time. It leaves less room for peace—and less room for the rest of the family to share the load.”
Katara nods in agreement.
“He plays with his kids like they’re his best friends.”
Toph’s face softens.
“He takes all of you, his family, on ridiculous adventures and whenever he comes to town…”
She snorts.
“Zuko and I call it…”
Her eyes flick to Zuko.
He looks up.
“The circus is back.”
Everyone laughs.
Even Zuko.
The warmth settles over the room.
Then Zuko looks at her.
His voice is quieter than before.
“Y-you seemed really happy there.”
Katara turns to him.
Her expression gentles.
“Very.”
The word hangs between them.
Her eyes drift to his mouth.
Just for a second.
Long enough.
Zuko notices.
His breath catches.
He looks away.
Then down at his hands.
Iroh watches the exchange over the rim of his tea.
A knowing smile tugs at his mouth.
Then he clears his throat.
Iroh sets his cup down carefully.
“I think,” he says calmly, “I know someone who can help us.”
