Work Text:
A bright full moon shone above them, bathing the wild grass around them with its silvery light. The sound of crickets was loud and overwhelming, but the skeletons couldn't blame the silly insects, the only ones out of place in that desolated scene were them, not the poor nature.
-Come on! Is it on?- The skeleton bounced with excitement, his eyes shining almost brighter than the moon. -Wait, i’m just turning it on!- The second skeleton clicked his tongue, he couldn't get the device to turn on.
-You did charge it up like i told you, didn't you?- The monster’s tone was one of accusation rather than one of genuine question, but the other one wasn’t faced by it. -Of course I did, you think I wouldn't charge it up for a situation like this? What kind of idiot do you take me for?-
-The one who doesn't believe in the paranormal perhaps?- Answered sarcastically as he crossed his arms. -Why would you even bother charging it up if you don't even care about all of this?-
-That’s where you’re mistaken, my dear Ink- He chuckled as he messed with the camera’s buttons, trying to find a way to turn it on. -I care about this just as much as you, so I charged this with the only intention to gather enough proof to show you that ghosts, in fact, do not exist- Suddenly, the camera made a beeping noise before showing a red dot next to the lens.
-Finally!- Ink cried before adjusting his grey beanie. -Okay, tell me when to start- Error, the other skeleton, adjusted the camera to be at his point of view, and aimed at Ink. With a brief gesture he told Ink the recording had just started.
-Hi future Ink and future Error! We’re at the abandoned neuropsychiatric hospital, and we’re going to do a quick and silly urban exploration in search of…- The cheerful skeleton pointed his flashlight right under his face to give himself kind of an eerie look before saying his next words in a ‘baleful’ voice. -Paranormal activity!- Error could only chuckle at Ink’s excited demeanor as he held the camera.
-We were told this once was a hospital that treated people with tuberculosis, it was later reformed to be a neuropsychiatric before it was abandoned. But before entering, we need to make sure we brought everything with us- The skeleton grabbed the backpack that was hanging on his bag and opened it to check all the supplies he brought.
-Weren't we supposed to do that before leaving the apartment?- Error asked, baffled as he approached Ink to have a better angle of the things Ink packed for the expedition.
-Well, they say it’s better late than never!- He just couldn't believe how optimistic the monster was. -Let’s see what you have…- He was just now realizing that leaving the task of bringing essentials to Ink, the most absent-minded skeleton he knew, was probably a bad idea. It was already too late to regret things anyway, so he might as well just go with it.
-I think we have everything: Flashlights, camera, snacks, bandaids, and water- Surprisingly, or rather miraculously, Ink had brought everything as Error told him.
-Oh and I also brought an EMF and a spirit box!- He can’t be serious can he? He had to be kidding. Error couldn't contain his laughter. -Seriously? You bought those toys?- It had to be a joke. Last time he checked those things were expensive as hell!
-Error these aren’t toys! These are professional devices and they’re gonna help us look for paranormal activity- Oh so he was serious. He was about to ask him how much he wasted in those ‘devices’ but decided not to, he didn't want to have a heart attack.
-So, are we ready to go?- He might not believe in ghosts but still was interested in what was inside of such a huge building. -Yes sir!- Ink said cheerily before turning on his heel and headed to the abandoned hospital.
The expedition had just started.
***
They could hear their footsteps against the hard cement floor and the debris scattered around the area. It was obvious that the place had been abandoned for years. The windows, now all broken, let in a chilly gust of breeze that seemed to follow the skeletons everywhere.
-Do you think we’re going to find something?- Ink turned around to face the camera as he kept walking backwards, ignoring how dangerous that was because of all the obstacles on the floor.
-If I have to be honest, I’m more scared of finding someone in here you know?- Error was dead serious about that. The chances of finding someone living inside abandoned places like these were certainly higher than finding any trace of ‘paranormal activity’.
-Really? Is that a thing? Nah, I doubt something like that is going to happen, Woah!- Ink gasped the moment he felt something obstruct his foot, making him stumble. Thankfully he didn't fall face right to the floor, even though Error wished he did, maybe that way Ink would learn to not be so careless with his surroundings. -Try not to kill yourself in the process okay? I don’t want to bury you in a place like this-
-Come on, I barely even stumbled!- He protested as he turned around to walk normally. -Just watch your step- Error chuckled while he kept filming his surroundings.
The place was dead silent, of course it was, it would be worrying if it wasn’t that way. Still, the pair of monsters couldn’t shake off the constant feeling of being followed, as if they were being heavily watched by something or someone far away.
-You feel it, right? The eerie aura of this place. There’s definitely something in here- Ink kept walking on the lead, inspecting every little detail of the halfway they had just entered. -I think you’re just making shit up because you’re overly influenced- Error was being genuine, in a way. Did Error also feel watched? Sure, but he thought it was a natural reaction, almost instinctive because of the place they were in.
-By the way, do you know where we are?- Error was memorizing all of the rights and lefts they were taking, every little step they took he would take note of to know how to get back out. Still, he needed to know which part of the hospital they were in.
-Well, we’re on the ground floor of course, I believe this hallway leads to the ER room, but I'm not sure- Ink tapped his chin thoughtfully as he squinted his eyes. -Really? An emergency room for people with tuberculosis? I don’t think that’s a thing, Ink-
-Oh really? What makes you so sure huh?- He put his hands on his hips as if he was trying to be somewhat ascertained. -Well first- The glitching skeleton stated confidently. -I actually did research about this place, something you probably didn't- Error’s head lifted in pride as he pointed at himself.
-So?- Ink wasn’t surprised at all. -So, I’m certain an emergency room is impossible for a place like this. Think about it, this place was designed specially to cure people with tuberculosis, that could take ages! And don’t get me started on trying to cure a mental disorder-
Ink wandered into a small room, it resembled more a closet or a cleaning storage than a ‘room’. -Couldn’t a person with a high developed tuberculosis storm in and need urgent care?- He asked as he took a look around the cabinet. His voice reverbed against the empty shelves and the walls with peeling paint. -I don’t think that’s how tuberculosis works, Ink- Error wanted to get inside the tiny room to take a better look at it with the camera, but it was too small for the skeletons to fit in.
It’s not like there was a lot to see either, just a bunch of dirty shelves with nothing but cobwebs and empty bottles that used to have cleaning products inside. The walls were all painted with dumb graffitis and marks. There sure were a lot of more interesting things to film than that.
-Ow, why didn't I bring some spraying paints with me? It would’ve been nice to paint something here- He liked those stupid drawings? Seriously? They looked like they were made by a toddler. Well he was talking to Ink after all, the guy loved anything that had to do with art. Still, what was even the point of those markings? -We’re supposed to explore the place right? If you had brought anything to paint you’d probably be distracted by now- He couldn't believe how easily distracted his friend was. -Oh, right!-
After checking the storage, the skeletons kept walking through the corridor. They passed by a few other rooms but they didn't seem too different from the previous storage room, so they decided to just ignore them.
The pair made their way silent, which wasn’t strange for them. Error kept silent because he was alert, his ‘ears’ were in search of any kind of weird or inexplicable sound that would alert him of any danger. As for Ink, he kept silent mostly because he was looking for noises as well, not because he was alert but because he was looking for the paranormal.
They eventually wound up in a wide but torn down hall. A counter and a few old and rusty chairs were the only things left by the people who once worked there. Probably the only reason why was because both the counters and the chairs were stuck to the floor.
-I think this is a reception- Ink mumbled while he took a look around. -Didn't we start at the main hall? Why would they need a second reception?- Behind the counter was a wall that was about the same length as the bar and extended up to the ceiling. On top, although difficult, could be read ‘Emergency Room’.
Ink snorted playfully the moment he noticed the sign. He turned around to face the camera and showed a sassy smile, a smile that clearly said ‘I told you’. -What was that about there not being an ER room?- Error could only roll his eyes before shaking his head. -There wasn’t any information about a room like this-
Ink decided not to tease his friend much, he knew the skeleton took his research seriously, so a situation like this was probably humbling enough.
What interested the pair the most was what was behind the reception’s wall. A long room with stretches that were placed right next to each other. An infirmary.
-...Creepy- Error didn't mean to say it outloud, he didn't want to admit the ambiance of the place was taking a toll on him. -I know, right? I’m telling you, there’s definitely something in here- Why was ink so sure about that anyway? What was he trying to prove?
For most of the expedition Ink had been taking the lead, entering the creepy rooms first and inspecting every detail of it, however for one or another reason this time was different. They didn't know why but noticed that none of them had put a step inside the infirmary, as if they weren’t willing to.
The shorter one faced the camera. -Ladies first?- He said hesitantly in a joking way, but that silly tone wasn’t enough to hide the layer of sudden worry in his voice. Error decided this might not be the best moment to tease his friend, so without hesitation he reached for the streaks on his cheeks and summoned a couple of blue strings. -Just take my hand- Ink didn't hesitate and held onto the strings as if his life depended on it.
That was their unique way to hold hands. Whenever they needed reassurance or comfort, Error would summon his strings and give Ink one of the ends. Since Error still wasn’t comfortable with touching people without freezing, they figured this was the safest way to do it, and in a way, it felt special for both of them.
Error took the first step, making sure to film everything as best as possible, even if his hand had turned shaky all of the sudden. His eyes were wide open and his hand gripped the strings just as hard as Ink was doing. He didn't want to admit it but he was worried. His steps were cautious and silent as they inspected the place, unlike Ink’s which were making quite the noise.
All of the sudden, a loud and long beeping like noise echoed through the room, making Error jump on his place before immediately turning his head towards the source of the noise. He entered in an ‘alert mode’ and was ready to throw hands at whatever thing that was with them.
To his surprise, or rather, to his disgrace, the only thing beside him was the idiot he had for a friend, who was smiling in wonder as he held a strange white device that looked like a controller. It had what he guessed was a scale of small lightbulbs that ranged from light green to a bright red, along with the loud and noisy beep.
-Look Error, the EMF is working!- He wanted to kill Ink for giving him the spook of his life. -Just what on earth is an EMF? And why is it making such a horrible sound? God, make it stop!- Ink chuckled, apparently the fear the skeleton once had felt disappeared all of the sudden, now replaced with the joy of his device working.
-Remember I told you it was used to detect a ghost? The red means an entity is in this exact room!- Ink squirmed in excitement, not realizing he let go of Error strings to wander the infirmary freely. -And why is that a good thing?- Error was skeptical at best, but if Ink’s theory was correct and spirits were real, he guessed that shiny little red dot was no good news.
-Because it means I was right. Eeek!-- Ink let out a shriek, jumping to his left before hiding behind Error. -What was that?! Ink what happened?!- He genuinely couldn't believe how skittish his friend could be.
-I saw a pair of eyes under the bed, Error I know what I saw!- It was like talking to a little kid before tucking them to sleep, except the little baby was almost 22 years old. Error groaned, he knew what he was getting into the moment he agreed to the expedition, plus, he knew that if he didn't join Ink the idiot would just go on his own and get hurt. At the end of the day, coming to this ‘haunted place’ had the best possible outcome
-For the love of god, Ink I’m certain there was nothing under the bed, it was probably your imagination. You’re watching tons of scary videos recently- That was mainly the reason why they were there. -Just look for yourself!- Ink whined with his finger pointing straight to the stretcher.
It was pointless, they weren’t going to leave that room until Error checked under the stretcher. He just wanted to get done with it and get out of the infirmary, it was creeping him out. -Whatever- He kneeled down and checked under the bed, making sure to get it on camera as well to prove to his roommate that there was in fact, nothing under the bed.
-See? Nothing- The flashlight made it clear. -I could’ve sworn I saw something, a pair of white dots- Error got back up with a grunt and dusted his knees. -Well, two dots are different from a pair of eyes, don’t you think?-
***
Nothing interesting happened since the encounter with the pair of dots, an encounter which Error did not experience and just helped to feed his skepticism. He had to admit it, he was getting bored and wanted to get out there. They had gotten to the neuropsychiatric ward by 12pm, and probably explored it for about an hour, hour and a half at best. Still, it was dark and cold, and he was getting tired. He wanted something interesting to happen, something to keep him entertained. Were ghosts seriously so difficult to find? No, they weren’t, they didn't exist to begin with.
Still, he was bored and stopped listening to Ink rambling about the place a while ago, he couldn't give less of a shit about its story anyway.
-We’re now heading to the first floor- Ink indicated, his head was slightly turned around to face the camera while speaking, but he still made sure to look where he was stepping. Seems like the previous ‘incident’ where he almost fell finally made him learn his lesson.
-Do you know where the first floor is?- Ink didn't answer immediately, he didn't face the camera either. It was as if he was trying to come up with an answer. Eventually he answered. -Nope! But I'm sure we’ll find it!- Great, they were potentially lost. Most of the time he loved how optimistic Ink was, but this time his optimism wasn’t of much help.
He didn't know for how long they walked, passing by empty rooms that had nothing interesting to get on camera. Ink tried to talk to keep the ambience up, but it didn't help much, at least not when Error wasn’t paying attention.
To ignore Ink was a skill Error developed because of the years of living with him. The skeleton would start a rant about something meaningless, and go off topic incredibly fast. Most of the time Error wasn’t able to keep track of it. -Error! Were you paying attention?- Shit, of course he wasn’t. -Uh yes, of course- He looked to his sides to look in search of anything that could help him cover the fact that he wasn’t paying attention to Ink’s ranting.
His eyes landed on an old, probably creaky, wide staircase that led up. That’s exactly what he needed. -Hey there’s the way up to the first floor, you were right, we found it!- Ink’s expression changed from one of disappointment to one of surprise. Did he really not notice the wide gap on the wall that clearly led to a staircase? God, his friend was blind, even more blind than him.
Whatever Ink was mad about, it didn't matter to him now. His eyelights changed in a blink to show a bright golden star in his left eye and an exclamation mark in his right. -Come on, we have no time to waste!- Without notice Ink darted to the staircase and began running up, letting Error far behind.
-Ink, wait goddamit!- He ran behind his best friend, but was too slow to catch him. At this point he probably got to the first floor way before him. -Can’t you just wait!?- He almost yelled at him when he got to the end of the staircase, but stopped himself and lowered his tone the moment he saw Ink standing at the end of the staircase, as if he couldn't dare to make a step forward.
In front of them was a lonely wheelchair in the middle of the corridor. It was almost orange colored because of the rust it had accumulated by the years in that place. -What is it? Scared already?- He teased the skeleton in front of him, who gave him an offended look. -What? I’m not scared! I was just… impressed, yeah, that’s the word-
-Okay then, lead the way- Not only was Ink way too gullible for his own good, he was also incredibly bad at lying. -Yes I’m on it, just a second- But nothing happened, Ink couldn't take a step forward to continue the exploration. -Can we do that again, please?-
Error rolled his eyes before summoning his strings again. -We can’t keep doing this everytime you’re scared- He teased his friend.Ink took the other end of the strings, making sure to hold them tightly. -Yeah yeah, whatever- With a new confidence, Ink took a step forward, and so the tour around the hospital continued.
Error was used to poking Ink and mock him whenever he asked him to hold hands. Error never meant it in a harmful way, but in an affectionate way, and Ink knew that. Ink knew his friend liked to do that just as much as he did, but of course, Error was way too proud to admit something like that outloud.
-I believe the first floor was used mainly for patients, it was some kind of residence- Error explained as the pair walked through the corridor, they haven’t found anything interesting yet. -So this is where they slept and got treated?- Ink asked, though for some reason he did not face the camera as he usually did. He seemed to still be a bit on edge, looking everywhere around him as if he felt something near them, even if there was nothing in the building besides them. -Exactly, many patients had to live here for months, probably years, just to get cured-
The floor creaked under their feet with every step they made. The gusts of wind made a low whistle every time they passed by a broken window. Error kept filming Ink’s back, documenting everything that happened around him, even if nothing that interesting happened.
God he was getting bored. Ink now was completely silent, at least listening to him going off topic was somewhat entertaining. But this? Now there was complete silence that was only interrupted by the sounds of nature like crickets, frogs and random insects. It was killing Error, he wanted something interesting to happen, anything.
Also, he didn't like to see Ink so worried and on edge. This was an urban expedition, they were supposed to be joking and having fun! He had to do something, something to get a good laugh out of his friend.
Suddenly, an idea came to his mind like a miracle, something funny and entertaining enough, something he could get a good laugh at.
Carefully and silently, making sure his steps weren’t listened to, he got as close as possible to Ink’s ‘ear’ and whispered in a dreadful and hoarse voice. -...Help…me- Ink let out a horrified scream, his frightened expression was perfectly captured by the camera lens.
As for Error, he was wheezing, gasping for air as he held on his knees in an attempt not to fall on the floor. He couldn't believe the reaction he got out of him, it was priceless, he didn't regret it one bit. -Error! Don’t scare me like that!- His friend cried, but he couldn't help it, Ink was just too gullible. -You should’ve seen your face! It was priceless!-
Ink pouted, attempting to appear mad, but couldn't help chuckling just a bit, Error’s laughter was way too contagious. -Whatever, let’s keep going- He gave his friend a smile and kept walking, Error followed close behind, although he was still giggling just a bit. His ‘fun’ had just started.
Trying to be as silent as possible, Error got close to Ink again, he just wanted to have a laugh again. -...Get…out- He whispered in the same eerie and dried voice he used before. Ink almost jumped on his place, his eyes almost got out of his eye socket because of the surprise. Again, his expression was priceless, and his reaction was enough to get a good laugh out of Error, who was now cackling on the floor.
-Error stop!- Ink didn't like to be laughed at, at least not when he was so on edge. -I’m sorry, I just couldn't help it- Error wasn’t sorry, not one bit, and Ink knew that. The skeleton kept walking in an attempt to ignore his dumb friend, but Error didn't care.
-Ink… I need your help…- He kept whispering creepily as he followed Ink, which only helped the skeleton to get mad. -Ha ha, really funny Error- Ink marked sarcastically. The eerie voice Error was using didn't have an effect on his friend anymore, Ink just answered sarcastically or pretended to be scared everytime Error mimicked the voice of a ‘ghost’.
It was fun for both of them, but Ink still couldn't shake off the feeling that something bad was going on around them. He wanted to laugh with Error and make jokes, but something didn't let him.
Error decided to stop, it was funny sure, but didn't want to upset Ink too much. So after playing for a bit and making sure his friend felt at least a bit better, he fell silent.
Something odd caught his attention, the camera lens began to fail, it glitched and froze instead of recording smoothly as it normally did. He gave it a couple of smacks attempting to fix the problem, but the camera kept malfunctioning.
Error was so immersed in trying to fix the recorder that he didn't realize that Ink had abruptly stopped on his tracks. He almost bumped against his friend. -Error I told you to stop- Ink’s tone had shifted to one that was dead serious. The skeleton turned around to face the confused skeleton that had the camera in his hands.
Ink had quite the frown and was pointing an accusatory finger at Error. -Stop it!- Error lifted his hands in surprise. What was Ink talking about? -Stop saying scary shit, it’s creeping me out!-
-What do you mean ‘creepy shit’ I didn't say a thing!- He was busy trying to fix that stupid device, he didn't have the time to mess with Ink, not that he wanted to, given how scared he was. -I know it was you, stop lying!-
-For the love of god, I don’t even know what you’re talking about!- Ink huffed before putting his hands on his hips, as if he was trying to look a bit intimidating. Of course he didn't look intimidating, not a bit, but Error was not going to point that out right now.
-You keep whispering scary stuff to my ear, it was fun at first but now it's getting annoying!- What was he on about? Was he imagining stuff because of how scared he was? -Ink I swear I didn't say anything, I’ve been trying to fix this ‘thing’ that stopped working all of the sudden- He shook the camera near to his head to emphasize his words as he raised his eyebrows. Ink looked confused for a bit, as if he didn't completely buy Error’s alibi. -Then who was whispering things to my ear? The wind?!- Ink complained, raising his hands above his head.
-I don’t know but it wasn’t me, maybe you’re just imagining things. Just like what happened with the pair of dots!- Just when Error finished his sentence, a cold breeze swung by right next to his ‘ear’. It was freezing, but what scared Error the most was the wind’s whistle, which almost seemed like a cry, like the voice of a lonely and scared person that begged for help.
That cry made Error’s blood freeze in fear. What was that? It was just his imagination, it had to be. What other explanation was there? Error’s face suddenly turned pale, but Ink didn't know why. -What happened, what is it?- His previous anger turned to worryness, he had never seen Error act like this before.
Error was faced with a choice, should he tell Ink what just happened? -It’s nothing, I just had a sudden cold, that's all- He faked a shiver, as if that would make Ink believe his lie -I think I didn't dress warmly enough- He didn't want to worry Ink, not that he would’ve believed him anyway. It probably was just his mind making things up, that’s all, nothing to worry about.
-Whatever, let’s keep moving, just don’t do it again- Things were getting weird: First the ‘eyes’ Ink saw under the stretcher, then the camera that started failing out of the sudden, and now the creepy wind. He was starting to hate the place.
Error didn't realize he got immersed in his thoughts again, since Ink was now a couple of steps away from him and ready to get out of that creepy hallway. -Are you going to just stand there?- Ink shouted, the blue string now far stretched but still being held on both ends. -Coming!-
****
It was obvious for the pair of young skeletons that the tone of the expedition had changed by that time. At first they used to laugh, tease and make jokes, but now both of them were on edge, waiting for something bad to happen.
-Wait, look- They were still exploring the first floor, it seemed to be endless. Error lost the count of how many rooms they checked and how many hallways they’ve been in. Was Ink seriously planning on checking the whole building out? -What is it?- Ink stopped on his tracks and stood next to two swinging doors. The windows on them were tarnished, though it was still possible to distinguish what was inside. -I know what this is, come on!- Ink entered the room, leaving Error no choice but to follow him without objection.
What was inside such doors wasn't surprising. Inside was an old, antique kitchen. The cabinets’ doors were all broken or torn down and the shelves were all empty, full of dust and lint. The only thing worth noting was an ancient oven that was also covered in dust and rust.
Ink wondered, amazed around the wide kitchen. Error didn't get it, what was so interesting about this old place? There had to be something more interesting than just spirits right? -So, remind me, why are we here?- He pointed at Ink with the camera, who was now dancing in circles in the middle of the room. His long scarf swung with him, spiraling around the smiling skeleton. For a brief moment, all the nerves and fear of the skeleton left his body.
-I saw a video where the people who were exploring got lots of activity right in this room!- Error grimaced with doubt. -You do know that those ‘encounters’ can be faked right? Quite easily I might add-
His friend stopped, taking a moment to compose himself before talking, so much spinning made him dizzy. A frown was clear on his face. -You’re no fun, you know that?- Error chuckled at his friend’s expression before leaning on a counter.
He felt an instant relish the moment his legs got a break, he didn't realize it but his feet were aching, probably because of all that walking without proper prior training. -We can take a break if you want- Ink raised his voice, noticing the state his friend was in.
Error nodded before plopping down to the ground, immediately feeling the cold, dusty tiles against him. The other skeleton followed before grabbing a pack of snacks from inside his backpack and tossing it towards Error. -I don’t know about you but I’m starving-
Error wasn’t as hungry as Ink, but he didn't mind a quick snack before going on with the expedition. So he grabbed the pack mid air and opened it.
The only sound that could be heard besides the wind and crickets, was the sound of munching that came from the pair of skeletons. They ate in silence without exchanging a word, far too immersed in their food to say something.
As they ate in silence, a loud growl resonated in the room. Error was the first one to notice, and couldn't help being worried by it. -Did you hear that? Where did it come from?- The growl appeared again, so he got up on the spot, ready to face whatever thing was making that noise.
-Error just sit down- Ink complained as he tugged his friend by the leg, which made Error immediately look down.
Ink had already finished his pack of snacks and was looking up at Error with a bit of shame in his eyes. -Just ignore it- He added before the growl made itself present again.
That’s when Error noticed where that strange sound was coming from, it was coming from Ink. He was still hungry.
A wide grin spread across Error’s face, his brain forming the perfect sentence to tease his friend. -Don’t even start- Ink cut him abruptly, though the smile the skeleton had was difficult to ignore.
-Aw, you’re no fun- He mocked Ink, using the same words he used moments ago, which got a small chuckle out of the artist.
Silence settled again, leaving the skeletons wandering in their own thoughts. -Remind me why are we here again?- Error cut the silence before glancing at his friend. -To look for the paranormal?- Ink didn't sound convincing at all, in fact, he seemed to be regretting going to that place.
-I don’t know, I just thought it would be fun you know? Have some spooks and laughs, maybe tell horror stories, i don't know. Maybe coming here was stupid- Ink braced his legs and rested his head on his knees. His tone started to become more and more apologetic as he spoke.
-I’m having fun- Error said out of the blue. He wasn’t lying, even if he did get bored a couple of times, he always found a way to have some fun. -Wait, really?- Ink perked up, his eyes now paying attention to Error.
-Well, yeah. I could be studying in my room, banging my head against the desktop because I can’t get the words to enter my head, but here I am, looking for the paranormal with my best friend-
Ink chuckled at the idea of Error trying to study. Maybe he had a final test, or he had to work on a project that made up like 70% of his final note. He didn't know. But knowing that Error preferred to be with him inside an abandoned building about to collapse rather than being anywhere else helped him to feel better.
-Even if we don’t find anything interesting?- Error shook his head in disagreement. -Seeing you get scared is interesting enough- The glitching one couldn't contain a chuckle when he saw Ink flipping him off. -You gave up with the paranormal already?-
Ink gasped, offended, covering his agape mouth with his palm. -How dare you? I would never. I firmly believe ghosts are real, I will die on this hill!- The artist was now being overly dramatic, doing a small act just for the sake of laughs. -We won’t leave this place until we find solid proof of paranormal activity-
Ink might as well start considering the possibility of living in that place, since he would never find such a thing. Or at least that was what Error thought. -So, what’s the plan?- He interrupted Ink, which took him by surprise.
-Well…Talk to them?- What a great plan, a totally solid plan. -How exactly?- Error couldn't believe he was asking that. -With this!- Ink dug inside his backpack until he got out a small, black plastic box. It had a speaker in the middle and a wire coming from the top. -What on earth is that?-
Ink giggled excitedly, with a wide grin spread on his face. -It’s a spirit box- That provided little to no explanation to Error, who was even more confused than before. -And what does it do?- He tried to grasp a bit more information.
-It changes radio frequencies at a rapid pace in hopes of catching something out of the ordinary, like a random phrase. People often use it to communicate with the dead- So it’s a scam. Error thought to himself, but didn't say it outloud, Ink would probably hit him for it.
-So, what are you going to do?- Nothing prepared Error for what Ink was about to do. Ink searched for something inside his backpack again, the various now empty wrappers of food rustled against each other as Ink moved his hand in look of whatever he was searching for.
-Here- His hand came out with a pack of candles. Error still didn't catch up on what was happening until Ink started setting them up in a circle. -You did not bring candles in here to set up a ‘ritual’- Now that was stupid to say the least.
-And what if i did?- The artist said bluntly as he grabbed a box of matches from one of the backpack’s pockets. -You probably don’t even know how to set one of these!-
-Of course I’m not setting anything, it’s just for ambiance- Ink complained as he started to light the candles one by one. Deep inside, he was surprised that Error wasn’t trying to stop him. -You’re gonna burn the whole fucking building down!-
-No I'm not, it’s just a bunch of harmless candles!- He did expect him to complain, but if he had to be honest, there wasn’t a single time that he didn't see his friend complaining about something, it was a part of his charm at this point.
Whatever, there was no use arguing with him. If there was one thing Ink was extremely good at besides painting, was his skill to not listen to Error’s advice.
Ink turned off his flashlight, letting the warm light of the candles embrace the skeletons. With a sigh, he grabbed the spirit box again and turned it up. It made a horrible screeching sound that made Error want to cover his ears and get out of there as fast as possible.
Ink seemed to mess with the buttons on the device, apparently to calibrate it, before he spoke to the air. -Hello? Is someone there?- But there was no answer of course. The device was rapidly changing from one radio station to another, nothing too far from what Ink explained a couple of seconds ago. However he was skeptical at best, he didn't quite understand how that thing was supposed to help to talk with the deceased ones.
-You sure that thing is not broken? Because it sounds as if it was- Ink lowered down the device’s volume just a bit before speaking. -No, it’s supposed to sound like that. Maybe we’re not lucky enough-
Error shrugged, it’s not like there was much to do, he didn't even understand how that box worked anyway.
Ink tried talking once more, but it was pointless, no one answered from the other side. -I guess they’re just not real after all- But as soon Error finished talking, a loud bang came from outside the kitchen, as if someone had knocked something and it fell on the floor. The boys looked at each other in surprise before darkness surrounded them.
The candles went out all at once, its warmth left the room, leaving the young explorers with a sense of cold and fear.
To say that it was dark would be an understatement. Error couldn't see what was two feet in front of him, and was sure Ink was in the same situation as him. He wanted to move, to reach out to his friend and make sure he was with him but his body didn't answer. He was frozen in his place, far too scared and surprised to do anything.
–Error, you alright?- Ink’s voice finally emerged from the darkness. Error nodded at first, but then realized his own stupidity. Ink couldn't see him, that was obvious. -Yes, I’m fine. You good?-
A rapid clicking sound echoed through the room, making Error shiver as he imagined what kind of creature could make such noise. -I can’t get this stupid lantern to work, goddamnit!- So that’s where the clicking sound was coming from. He clearly needed to calm down, all these spooks were starting to make him imagine things.
-It’s alright, maybe the batteries are just busted, nothing new- That was a poor explanation at best. The lantern never gave any signs of its batteries dying, but Error needed to convince himself that everything that just happened was totally normal.
He took a step forward, even though the only thing he could see in front of him was total darkness. Error bumped against Ink, which was weird since he could’ve sworn the skeleton was much further than just a step away. -Ow, I’m sorry- The glitching one apologized.
-Huh? For what?- His heart sank the moment he heard Ink’s voice coming from behind him. He froze again, his heart beating with pure fear and despair. What the heck was in front of him? He wanted to raise his hand, to touch it just to believe what was happening was real.
Light surrounded him once more, except this time it wasn’t the white, cold glow of the flashlight, it was instead orangely warm. Ink managed to light up one of the candles since he apparently gave up on the flashlight.
Fear crept up his spine when he realized there was nothing in front of him, just pure air and emptiness surrounding all of his corners, he couldn't have bumped against anything. -You good?- Apparently his fear was obvious enough for Ink to notice. -What did you apologize earlier for?- He wanted to talk but the words wouldn't leave his mouth. How does someone explain what just happened without sounding crazy?
-I could’ve sworn I bumped against something, but there’s nothing in front of me- His voice quivered, Error didn't know if that was because of the fear of because of how cold the room had suddenly become. Sure the place itself was cold, but the change in temperature was somehow abrupt.
-It’s probably just your imagination playing tricks on you- It was probably not, that’s what Error thought. To imagine things was one thing, but how does one manage to imagine the sensation of bumping? If his brain was able to do that, it for sure felt way too real.
-Come on, we have to keep going- Ink already had the backpack on his back and was ready to get out of the kitchen. -Wait, are we still going?- Error was surprised, he would’ve guessed Ink wanted to get out of that place just as much as him. -Of course, i want to know where that noise came from-
Error didn't want to, but he knew he had no choice but to follow along. He was horrified by the sight that awaited him, another dark hallway that seemed to have no end, and without the flashlight, it seemed way more creepy than ‘usual’.
-Let’s go- Ink didn't leave a place for complaint, since he started walking without even glancing back. Error was doubtful at best. It was hard to see what was going on around them, the only source of light they had was the rays of the moon that filtered through the broken windows.
Error followed reluctantly. What started as a silly adventure ended up in an exploration with a dense mood. With his camera in hand, and the low, cheap flash it emanated, they kept exploring.
*****
Footsteps echoed through the hallway, the sound only made Error’s nerves grow even more. He knew those footsteps were nothing but theirs, but still couldn't shake the feeling he had since the start of the expedition, the feeling of being watched.
Ink didn't say a word, but his gestures told Error everything he needed to know. The way Ink breathed heavily with every step, the way his hand played with the end of his scarf. It was obvious, even if he was trying to hide it, Ink was just as scared as him.
The sound of their footsteps tapping against the cement floor seemed to grow louder, in fact, it felt as if Error’s brain was suddenly conscious of every little sound that surrounded them. The wind’s whistle, the cricket’s song, the building’s beams creaking with the weight of hundreds of years.
Everything was way too much, he needed to stop just for a second, he wanted to cover his ‘ears’ and take a moment to breathe. His feet came to a halt, so did Ink’s since he noticed the state his friend was in, however, Error noticed it.
He held his breath, making sure to not make a sound, but was sure of what he heard. The floor creaked a final time before the steps that were following them stopped as well. His heartbeat raised, he didn't want to believe what was happening. They were being followed.
With minimal movement he looked at Ink, he could tell by the look on his face that his friend was just as aware of him, and therefore worried to the bone. What were they supposed to do? Was there even anything they could do?
-Error? Why did you stop? Come we have to keep going- Ink turned around and kept walking, though deep inside he was begging for Error to just follow him and pretend nothing happened.
Error quickly caught up, walking alongside Ink instead of being behind like he did before. -What are you doing?- He whispered to Ink. -We need to get out- As soon as Ink stopped talking a rapid series of footsteps approached them before suddenly halting. They both turned around just in time to witness a metal cabinet fall straight to the ground, the crashing sound reverbing through every bone in their body.
Error didn't have time to think since before he could even notice Ink ran away in screams. -Wait, Ink!- But it was pointless. Cursing under his breath he decided to run after his friend.
Another crashing sound could be heard far away, as if the building itself was tired of their wandering and wanted them gone. He didn't care about it now, he didn't care about anything except finding his friend and leaving that place.
He felt his legs failing him, growing weaker with every step he made. The adrenaline cursed his body but was not enough to keep his body moving. He wanted to scream, why was he so weak all of the sudden!? -Ink where are you!?- He shouted to the top of his lungs but it was to no avail, his voice was nowhere near.
They were lost, lost and away from each other. God, what was he even supposed to do, where should he even start?! He had to calm down, if his mind was clogged with useless thoughts and anguish there was no way he was finding Ink.
-Ink! If you hear me, follow my voice!- He couldn’t be that far, not possible, if there was someone with a worse physical condition than him that was certainly Ink. He had to be somewhere close, probably way too scared and overwhelmed to answer to him.
He kept walking, trusting his gut to lead him where Ink might have gone. He didn't like to wander purely by heart, but it wasn’t like he had a better clue.
-Ink please, if you hear me answer please!- But nobody came. He was growing impatient, but especially he was getting worried by the second. The place was huge, the small artist could be literally anywhere.
*****
Where was he? He didn't know. One second he was running away from something, the other, he was inside a dusty cabinet, hugging his legs tightly as he trembled in fear and exhaustion. How long had he been running for until he got there? He didn't know, he didn't remember any of it.
Ink could barely see what was in front of him because of the dim light that filtered through the cracked walls. The lack of proper light deformed his surroundings, he couldn't make out what was real and what was a sick, twisted joke played by his brain. The small table in front of him started moving; it then became a small, deformed dog; it then took the form of a person walking on all fours.
Ink shook his head before covering his face. He needed to calm down, none of that was real, none of that was real. It was just his mind playing jokes on him, it had to be.
He heard an empty tin fall from one of the dusty cupboards, then another one, its dangling sound echoing against the walls. He had to leave. Whatever thing that was looking for him was now in the room with him.
Slowly lowering his hands, Ink took a deep breath and gathered courage. With a quick movement he got out of his hiding spot and the room he was in. Ink ran as fast as he could with the small energy he managed to recover.
Where was he heading? He didn't know, anywhere but near that thing.
-Inky! Where are you!? If you hear me, follow my sweet voice!- His feet stopped way before he managed to notice, it almost made him fall to the ground. He heard Error’s voice, it had to be his. It was his tone, and the way his voice glitched with every intonation. It was him, he was close!
A wave of relief washed him as he approached his voice. He felt like a kid coming back to his house after a rough day at school. He felt that this nightmare was finally about to end. -Error I’am he!- But his heart left his body the moment he felt a hand covering his mouth.
Despair filled every inch of his body, his eyes shut down as he tried to squirm away from the hands of his captor. He didn't want to see, just because of the fear of encountering the unknown.
He felt his body being tied down by thin but strong strings. Wait, he recognized that sensation way too well. -Shut, the fuck, up- Error’s instruction was clear, but his voice was incredibly low, it was appropriate to say he was whispering. Something was wrong.
-I don’t know what the hell was that, but that was not me- Ink wanted to hug Error tightly, but now that wasn’t the time for it. It’s not like he would let him anyway. -I’m going to untie you, then we’ll be gone as quick as possible from here, you hear me?-
Ink nodded as quick as his head let him, he wanted nothing else but to be gone from that place. The strings around him loosened before disappearing. -Inky, are you there?- Hearing Error’s voice so perfectly fine made Ink sick. It wasn’t him, the real Error was in front of him, what he heard was just a sloppy, half baked copy, yet it sounded just like him. It was horrifying.
Error summoned his strings one last time and tied them to Ink’s phalanges without warning. Ink almost jumped in surprise, the sudden feeling took him out of his thoughts. -I don’t want to lose you again- The glitching one explained. -I don't want to either- Ink whispered as he held tightly to the strings.
They didn't have a plan to get out of there, they didn't even know what was happening, but the skeletons were determined to leave that place unharmed.
Without realizing they started running back from where they came. They could hear things being knocked down behind them. Ink didn't know if those sounds were made because they were running way too fast, causing some things to knock over; or if it was because something was genuinely following them. Either way, he didn't care. He wasn't going to look back to check, his only worry was to get out of there.
As they ran, Error slowly started to recognize their surroundings. The singular graffiti patterns and marks, the teared down paint on the walls. They were close to the main hall, close to where this nightmare had started.
It took seconds that felt like hours to recognize the exit to the building. The wide and tall arched doors, once glorious and prestigious, now teared down with faded glory. The exit was right there, they were so close to leaving that horrid place.
With their last effort, they made their way out of the building. The moon had almost disappeared, and the first glance of the sun was just beginning to make an appearance. They spend the whole night inside the hospital.
Error fell to the ground, he never felt so relieved to be outside of a place. Ink fell to his knees, desperately gasping for air. None of them could believe what just happened to them. They were far too tired and stunned to even process what just happened. Was it even real?
A loud bang was heard behind them. The threatening doors slammed shut, denying the entry to its visitors. That was the last bit of proof the skeletons needed to confirm that everything that just happened was real.
-I need to sit down and rest for a bit- Ink was the first one to speak. He wanted to sound unfaced, but couldn't stop his body from shaking. -Yeah, me too- Error’s voice was more glitchy than usual, it was obvious that the events had affected him.
No one spoke for a bit, either because they were too tired to speak, or because they didn't know how to word their thoughts and feelings. -24 hs McDonalds?- Error managed to say between puffs of air.
-Yes please- Just the thought of food put a smile on Ink’s face.

Years passed after that event, but Error and Ink decided to never talk about it nor share it with friends.
All records of proof they had, like Error’s recordings, just banished like thin air or were corrupted beyond repair. In a way, it felt like the best outcome for both monsters, they didn't want to have a souvenir of the worst night of their lives.
However, at night, when everyone’s asleep, they both can hear the undetectable. Footsteps behind them, small cries hidden between the wind’s whistle. It was as if that horrible experience never left them alone.
Going into that building changed Error and Ink’s life forever, they were now bonded by something only they could understand: The unnatural.
