Work Text:
The chilling wind whips around me. Frostbitten air freezes my hands and face. Way up here, any sound of civilisation was long gone; not that they’d notice my disappearance. No one had ever cared, well, except for one. A single tear rolled down my face; I doubted I had any more left in me. The one that had cared: Daniel, my best friend since we were children. Memories of him flashed through my mind, although none were good. He had been the first to succumb to the illness, the illness that this thing had caused, and it was all Cam’s fault. I’d been unable to save his best friend, my only friend had died in his arms, and could do nothing. God I really was stupid.
I edged closer to end of the ledge. Icy gusts stung the fresh cuts on my arms and made me shiver. I could feel a presence looming over me, his presence: the entity. The creature that had made my life worse than it already was, worse than I could’ve ever imagined. It’s presence taunted me: “Do it Cam,” it seemed to echo through my mind, “jump. No one will care. No one will notice. There is nothing left for you.” I pushed off the ledge, closing my eyes for the final time.
It was cold. So very cold.
I lay on the ground. Pain was all I had ever felt, and it would be the last thing I feel. I deserve this, I thought, I only hurt everyone. Then it all faded to black.
—o—
I awoke to see a figure clad in red sitting next to my immobile body. Wait a minute… I awoke? I really can’t do anything, I can’t even kill myself right! As I gained more consciousness, the pain returned to my body. The pain that I deserved. The pain not even equal to a millionth of the pain that I has caused. I could see the figure more clearly now: he was a man with a red cloak, brown hair and beard and a scar across one side of his face. He smiled warmly at me.
“… who are you?” I asked tentatively. Maybe I was dead after all.
“My name is Sausage. I am a necromancer. I just saved your life.”
I said nothing, but I could feel tears roll down my face. Why couldn’t that have been the end? The end to all this suffering? Did Sausage really have to save me?
“Why.” I asked simply, “why would you do that.”
“I was asked to.”
“By who?”
“By Lady Death herself. She told me it was not your time yet.”
“Why would she care. Why would anyone care. Why can’t I just die?”
Sausage answered none of my questions, only paused before saying:
“You are worth something Cam.”
Suddenly, I felt myself drifting off into a peaceful sleep. I didn’t even stop to question how he knew my name, let alone how the pain of my broken bones and bleeding wrists had suddenly gone away.
I felt warm.
