“And you’re sure there’s no other rooms available?” Takao asks, mildly frustrated.
The hotel receptionist gives him a sympathetic glance, “I’m sorry, sir, we’re all booked up due to the snowstorm outside. You and your friend will have to share a room.”
Midorima sighs, “I should’ve been better prepared for this. Cancers were last today according to Oha-Asa, so I should’ve gotten a bigger lucky item.” The lucky item in question was a lollipop, and Midorima had one of the smaller ones, unable to find anything bigger due to the weather.
Takao grins at the thought of Midorima with one of those large, rainbow lollipops and tells him, “Well, it can’t be helped, Shin-chan.”
He turns to the receptionist, “We’ll take the last room, please!”
She nods and types on the computer for a couple seconds before handing both Takao and Midorima a keycard and explaining to them the basic rules of the hotel. The two are too tired from their trip to pay very much attention, just nodding whenever appropriate so that they can get upstairs as soon as possible. They had been celebrating with the other Shutoku upperclassmen because they were going to graduate soon. The trip had been going hiccup-free until a few hours ago when the storm hit the area just as Takao and Midorima realized that they couldn’t stay at the hotel where the rest of the team were staying. There was a technological issue - something about the system being unable to handle the quantity and speed of rooms being filled up. They bounced from hotel to hotel, desperately looking for a hotel with two empty rooms. They eventually found the hotel they were staying at now, and despite the fact that the two had to share a room, a thought that Takao was trying very hard not to think about right now, they were honestly just grateful that they ended up finding a room at all.
The duo rode up the elevator, and arrived at the room. Midorima entered the room first, and Takao heard the breath catch in his throat.
Takao frowned, “What’s up, Shin-chan?” He said, entering the room, “Is there a… oh.”
The room was nice, well furnished and somewhat spacious.
However, there was only one bed.
What was this, a poorly written fanfiction? Takao thought.
“Well, guess I’ll sleep on the floor then.” Takao sighed.
Midorima looked at him with confusion, “Don’t be ridiculous, it’s a king-size bed. There’s no need to force yourself to endure unnecessary discomfort, nanodayo.”
Internally, Takao panicked. Was Midorima, his crush , actually suggesting that they sleep on the same bed? Holy shit.
Externally, Takao smirked and glanced up at Midorima. “I think Shin-chan just wants an excuse to cuddle.”
Midorima gifted him with a blush and glanced away, clearly embarrassed, “Shut up, Bakao, let’s just unpack and get this over with.”
Takao let out a laugh as the two fully entered the room and began to unpack. He looked for pajamas - or really anything that wasn’t dirty - and found a comfy hoodie, as well as a pair of really short shorts. He had borrowed them from Kise to wear during this trip in a moment of weakness when he was convinced that he could woo Midorima during this trip. Now, in all of his unfortunate, post-travel clarity, he felt himself blushing at the thought of wearing these in front of Midorima. He scrambled for an alternative that he knew wasn’t there and eventually accepted his fate.
What’s the worst that could happen? Shin-chan’s already seen me somewhat undressed in the locker rooms. One part of him said.
Kazunari. That is VERY different than wearing BOOTY SHORTS in a HOTEL ROOM with him ALONE. Another part of him said.
He shook his head to clear his thoughts and told Midorima, “I’m gonna change in the bathroom, okay?”
Midorima let out a grunt of agreement as he kept unpacking and Takao took his clothes and toiletries into the bathroom with him. He reassures himself with the thought that maybe it’s not as bad as he remembers, but after changing into them and glancing at the mirror, that thought erases itself from his mind.
The slightly oversized hoodie covers his hands and fingers, as well as most of the shorts. When he turns and lifts up the hoodie slightly to see the shorts, Takao’s eyes widen. Honestly, he looks kind of hot. Now, the idea to seduce Midorima in these shorts doesn’t seem too far fetched after all. A quick 360 view confirms his thoughts and he takes in a deep breath to reaffirm that he’s actually doing this.
Takao stepped out of the bathroom and walked over to his luggage. He nonchalantly called out to Midorima, “The bathroom’s open, Shin-chan!”
Midorima let out a hum of acknowledgement that suddenly gets cut off as Takao feels Midorima’s gaze on him. Holy shit Kazunari, don’t freak out, you definitely have his attention now. Just follow the plan.
Takao bends over to grab his charger from the luggage.
He heard a sharp inhale from Midorima’s general direction and smiled to himself. He turns and catches Midorima check him out, and when Midorima finally makes eye contact with him, he gives Midorima a small smile. Midorima’s face turns red and he mutters an excuse, very quickly walking to the bathroom. Takao gives himself a mental fist bump.
Fuck yes, I’ve been waiting to do that forever. After that glance he gave me, there’s no way this is unrequited! He grins to himself again and plops down on the bed, scrolling on his phone mindlessly. When Midorima reenters the room wearing his traditional full length pajamas, he looks more put together, much to Takao’s chagrin.
Takao yawns and puts his phone away. As he snuggles under the blankets, he wants to double check that everything’s okay with Midorima and Takao isn’t accidentally making him super uncomfortable.
“Hey, are you good, Shin-chan? If these shorts are making you uncomfortable and you want me to change out of them, just let me know, okay?”
Midorima sits down on the bed and looks at Takao, “No, it’s alright. They were just-” He cuts himself off, “-unexpected.”
“As long as you’re okay with it!” Takao says, looking up at Midorima.
A few minutes pass as Midorima reads and Takao gets comfortable. Eventually, Midorima puts away his glasses and lies down, closing his eyes. Takao is gazing at him, admiring his face without the glasses, when a gust of wind from the AC unit makes Takao have a full body shiver. Being in the same bed, Midorima, of course, notices, and opens his eyes. “What happened, Takao?”
“These shorts are making me feel…” Another gust of wind makes him grimace, “Cold.”
Midorima affectionately rolls his eyes, “Nanodayo, of course you’ll feel cold if you’re wearing shorts like that. Here, come closer.”
Midorima shifts closer and Takao’s eyes widen, “Whoa, Shin-chan, are you sure?”
Midorima nods, “Yes, of course, why would I suggest it if I wasn’t?”
Takao edges closer to Midorima, and when their legs finally touch, Takao needs to suppress a gasp. Holy shit, Midorima is so warm . Takao adjusts so that Midorima is essentially spooning him, sending butterflies fluttering in his stomach. Midorima wraps his arms around Takao’s stomach and buries his head in the crook of Takao’s neck. Takao wills himself to keep his thoughts PG-13 and eventually settles into the comfort of Midorima’s warmth. The two fall asleep in that very position.
That night marked a distinct change in their relationship, going from very codependent best friends to something more. Because they had a bond so indescribably close, this shift was never explicitly discussed, but still acutely felt by both parties.
When Midorima wakes up the next morning, limbs entangled with Takao’s, he fondly gives Takao a kiss on the top of his head. How could he resist, for his Takao looked so beautiful in the morning sunshine.
