The Elements before doom

Summary:

Within the deep depths of Skylands, furthest towards where very few have explored, past even the most dangerous terrains. There is a massive cluster of land, where there is a collection of the most powerful buildings that host many mysteries, and its protectors.

The Temples of Doomsdays Elements.

And the guardians of this place, the Duality Wielders

Before a small team is sent to a mission to prove the worth of the latest member, the portal master trainee would question something they had not asked before, or hadn't had the chance to ask the question.

What is the origin of these guardians?

Notes:

Welcome to my writing, the first chapters will be setting up the main OCs of this series and after I get the backstories written down I will get to explore more about the rest of the SKylands with these characters, possibly writing in some of the cannon ones too LOL

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: The master of portals, not of stories

Chapter Text

A young figure was in their room, a teenager specifically. They would be looking at themselves in the mirror, as they felt distracted by the details they saw. Kivren knew they weren't normal for a typical Skylands inhabitant. Well, a human transferred to the world of Skylands was quite rare. But they held an unusual power, or two things that normal humans that arrive to this dimension usually wouldn't.

Kivren not only had the power to use the portals of Skylands, they as well were connected to the eternal source of energy that powered everything in the islands of Elemental Belonging. Turning not only an already powerful destiny they had as a portal master, but possibly granting them powers even beyond what others could dream of.

Taking a deep breath, Kivren would distract themselves from the idea of destiny, or whatever was possibly ahead of them. They still had things to do and they were still just a trainee, under the guidance of the Silver Shine learning to become someone good, someone who knew who they were. There still was a long way ahead, or so Eloquent Lagoon said and Kivren had to believe her, after all, she was the Silver Shine, the leader until they became of age. They still were "free", it wasn't as free as they'd ever hope to be, but it was much better than the camp their parents had once tried to send them to.

Suddenly being alerted from their thoughts by the ringing of the intercom. The voice of Charge Keeper coming through, "Protectors of the temple, this is a friendly reminder of the meeting in half an hour, today's topic being of future missions and their personel", the voice was robotic with a charm to it. Even if Kivren didn't at first question it, the robot had sounded more alive than some people they knew from before.

Walking to the mannequin that wore their main outfit, Kivren would take a moment to change into their official uniform. They gladly put on their extravagant headpiece that hid their face behind a veil, it was made of material they could see through whilst still hiding their face. Feeling more sure about their appearance now, they were more confident as they finally left their room, so they took their time to stroll to the meeting room. After all, they had time since everything had been going good for a while, so elder protectors would be a lot calmer and easier on everyone.

The hallways were empty, large and imposing with echoes of distant sounds being only a whisper, most likely the group of trainees, three that were never alone. Kivren usually wouldn't be distracted by these things, but as they walked, alone, images of their past would slowly come back to haunt them. The memories and voices repeating, reminding how they had no one outside this place, how they were supposed to be something their parents wanted them to be. Suddenly they register a voice, something familiar. Then it sounded again, their dead name was called behind them, and it felt so real, like there was someone there. But when Kivren whipped around to stare where the voice came from, they saw no one. There was nothing to call out to them but they swore it felt so real.... before they heard it again. Louder, more dominant as everything around them felt wrong, "REN!" this voice was unmistakable. It was their father. He had found them and they were in danger. He was going to kill them for dressing up like this, for running away- no, Kivren wouldn't let that man catch them. They had to run.

And so, with fear running through their veins, they couldn't fully focus on where they were going. But it was purely luck that they weren't running into any walls or anyone else, or was it that they were paying just enough attention so that they could get away effectively? But where could they go? Where could they hide? Maybe they could keep running, keep moving and not let their father catch them. Their vision would slowly fog up, as if something was beginning to cover their eyes. They couldn't stop, they had to run, hide, get away from the man who'd kill them- They would feel something swipe below their legs and they fell to the ground, making them roll a little bit as they came to a stop. Letting out a sob as they slowly came to, feeling the fuzz in their mind subside for a mere moment as they looked up at a familiar pale dragon with purple scales speckled here and there, Eloquent Lagoon. Kivren let out a silent sob as they tried to get up and noticed how Lagoon had lowered her head to be in eye level with them. They attempted to avoid eye contact before she spoke, "Did you hear him again?" such a simple question from her made them shiver. It seemed that Lagoon took note, "Do you wish to be excused from the meeting until you are feeling better? " she questioned, to which Kivren could only raise their hand to show a thumbs up, luckily Lagoon could read their body language enough to tell they wouldn't speak for a while.

Much much later

Kivren took a deep breath, sitting on the couch was helping them ease their mind from their past. Of course they hadn't completely missed everything about the meeting, with this room being beside the meeting room, allowing the portal trainee to hear most of the topics of the meeting. It does seem that it was coming close to an end soon, just the final topic of the final mission plan is going on. Kivren stood up and dusted themselves off, they were lucky to be here, especially with what happened in their home. But now, they should probably make their appearance for rest of the meeting and not ruminate about their past... Although, thinking more deeply about it, they came to question something. They had rarely talked about their own past sure, but they knew barely anything about the origins of everyone here. It they felt like it should be important for them to know.

Walking to the door that connected to the main meeting area, they took a deep breath before entering the room. As a few heads turned to look at them but soon everyone was back on topic, allowing Kivren to join them, even if late.

Sauntering over to the table, they took their seat and listened to the meeting, it was the usual stuff and a very few arguments. Maybe Kivren could satiate their curiosity after the meeting, afterall, everyone was here. Or at least, everyone who worked here.
