Chapter 1: Orange Juice

Chapter Text

“Breakfast is ready!” Cassie yells from the kitchen, plating eggs, bacon, and toast onto two plates. With skillful precision she takes her blue and white gingham apron off, careful not to mess up her freshly curled hair. She begins to set the table in the next room. She pours two large cups of orange juice, gathers the jam and butter from the fridge, and arranges the silverware on the napkins. Cassie hears the click of heels coming down the stairs and sets the plates down. A few short moments later Maddy appears in the dining room wearing a gray pinstripe suit tailored sharp against her figure. Her dark hair pinned perfectly in place, makeup flawless. Maddy’s expression softens for a moment when her eyes meet Cassie’s. The two had been living together at Cassie’s house for a little under a month. Maddy accepted Cassie’s offer to move in almost immediately to both of their surprise. The two had survived the unimaginable together. For the both of them the idea of sleeping in separate houses felt impossible.

“Sit…eat before the food gets cold” Cassie says eagerly, motioning for Maddy to sit. “You do know you don’t have to make breakfast every morning?” The dark-haired girl says, adjusting in her seat, picking up scrambled eggs on her plate with her fork. “I know I don’t HAVE to; I want to…I want to do all I can around the house to make your life easier. Cooking, cleaning, grocery shopping, laundry, everything. When you get home from work, I want you relaxed with a glass of wine, not thinking about the chores that need to be done…Cassie explains through bites of toast. “I don’t know,” Cassie continues, avoiding eye contact. “ I just like taking care of you. I like knowing you can come home and everything is ready and taken care of, I-” Cassie’s eyes catch Maddy’s. Maddy’s expression eased with something almost amused.

Oh fuck! Why did I say all that? Just say I like cooking and leave it at that. Oh god, oh god I-

Before Cassie could backtrack, Maddy rests her hand lightly over Cassie's for a brief moment. “That’s kinda sweet Cass,” she says lazily, the nickname making Cassie’s heart skip a beat. Maddy gives the glass of orange juice in her other hand a once-over before wrinkling her nose. “I’m not drinking this though. I’ve already brushed my teeth and put my lipstick on.”

Oh

Without thinking Cassie reaches across the table, taking the glass for herself, fingers brushing Maddy’s for a moment. She lifts the glass to her lips, drinking from it slowly, holding Maddy’s gaze over the rim of the cup. Cassie’s heart bloomed low in her stomach when Maddy’s eyes dipped to the movement of her throat before returning to her face. Just as Cassie began to remove her lips from the glass, liquid still swishing around in the cup, Maddy’s voice drips with amusement.

“Finish it…C’mon…I know you can.”

Cassie’s stomach tightens. She lifted the glass higher, nose brushing against the rim without hesitation. Warmth began to fog the glass each time she exhaled. Soft swallowing sounds muffled inside the cup as Maddy watched. A high-pitched whimper broke from Cassie’s lips as Maddy kept eye contact.

“There you go…That’s it Cass …just like that.” Maddy murmured slow but stern. Her mouth never fully closed. Maddy’s eyes were locked on Cassie. The attention should’ve made her uncomfortable. Instead, it did the exact opposite. The way Maddy was looking at her ignited something warm and wet between her thighs. Maddy was looking at her again. Really looking at her.

“C’mon Cass…you’re doing so good…you’re almost there.”

I can stop whenever I want to. I can stop whenever I want to.
I can stop whenever I want to. I can stop whenever I want to.

The last bit of orange juice slid cool and bitter across Cassie’s tongue. She swallowed carefully beneath Maddy’s gaze, throat tightening once more before the glass finally emptied. The clink of the glass was loud against the wood table. Cassie’s fingers lingered around the cup a second too long before finally letting go. Something unreadable flickering across Maddy’s face as she slowly sat back in her chair. Her dark nails tapping against the table, eyes still fixed on Cassie.

“Interesting.” Maddy says coolly, completely unbothered. Though she was still looking at Cassie afterwards like she was still thinking about what just happened.

“Hey, so- “

Maddy’s phone starts to ring. Interrupting Cassie’s next words. She could hear somebody screaming on the other line but couldn’t make out what they were saying. “yes...yes, I’m literally on the way right now. Traffic is insane...” Maddy stands up and mouths “I have to go.” Cassie follows behind her as she heads out the front door. Maddie embraces her in a hug that lingers a bit longer than usual. She kisses Cassie's forehead and waves a quick goodbye like she does every morning, but this time it feels different. Cassie watches as Maddy pulls out of the driveway and into the road in her bright red 1962 Ford Thunderbird convertible.

While Cassie cleans the kitchen she can’t stop thinking about it.

There you go
That’s it Cass
just like that.

Heat travels up her neck. The words don’t mean anything. They couldn’t have meant anything. So why was it making her so hot and bothered?
