Work Text:

The eight of them had been friends for so long that everyone around them assumed nothing could ever change their dynamic.

At least, that’s what Yeosang used to believe.

Everyone knew Yeosang as the quiet one. The calm one. The one who preferred listening instead of talking. Around strangers, he was polite but distant. Around classmates, he was reserved. Around people he wasn’t close with, his expressions rarely changed.

But around Wooyoung?

Yeosang became a completely different person.

Only Wooyoung knew how to make him laugh until his stomach hurt.

Only Wooyoung could convince him to play stupid games at two in the morning.

Only Wooyoung could get him talking nonstop about things that didn’t matter.

With Wooyoung, Yeosang wasn’t the quiet boy everyone knew.

He was loud.

Playful.

Comfortable.

Happy.

And Wooyoung loved that version of Yeosang.

For years, they were inseparable.

Whenever there was a group activity, they automatically paired together.

Whenever there was a choice, they chose each other.

Nobody questioned it.

Not even Yeosang.

Because that was simply how things were.

Then San entered Wooyoung’s life.

At first, nothing seemed different.

San was friendly, energetic, and easy to get along with. It didn’t surprise anyone when he and Wooyoung became close.

Even Yeosang liked San.

How could he not?

San was a genuinely good person.

So when Wooyoung started spending more time with San, Yeosang didn’t think much about it.

Until one day.

“Okay, everyone! Pair up!”

The teacher’s announcement filled the classroom.

Without thinking, Yeosang looked toward Wooyoung.

Wooyoung was already looking elsewhere.

“San!”

San looked up.

“What?”

“Partner?”

“Sure!”

And just like that, they were walking away together.

Yeosang stood there for a second.

Then he quietly paired with someone else.

It wasn’t a big deal.

At least, that’s what he told himself.

Except it kept happening.

Every game.

Every project.

Every activity.

Every choice.

Wooyoung chose San first.

Yeosang always ended up watching from the side.

The worst part wasn’t that Wooyoung chose San.

The worst part was that Wooyoung didn’t even seem to notice.

Yeosang never complained.

Never confronted him.

Never said anything.

Because what was he supposed to say?

“Please choose me instead”?

It sounded childish.

Pathetic.

So he kept quiet.

And little by little, the distance between them grew.

The group noticed.

Especially Jongho.

Jongho was the youngest, but somehow he always noticed things everyone else missed.

He noticed how Yeosang’s eyes automatically searched for Wooyoung whenever they entered a room.

He noticed how Wooyoung no longer sat next to Yeosang as often.

He noticed how conversations between them had become shorter.

Less natural.

Less frequent.

He noticed everything.

But he didn’t say anything.

Not yet.

Meanwhile, Mingi was dealing with his own problem.

“Yunho.”

“Hm?”

“Why were you talking to them for thirty minutes?”

Yunho blinked.

“They asked for help.”

“So?”

“So I helped them.”

Mingi frowned.

Yunho laughed.

“You’re jealous again.”

“I’m not.”

“You are.”

“I’m not.”

“You absolutely are.”

Mingi looked away.

Because maybe he was.

A little.

Okay, a lot.

Yunho had been his best friend forever.

Mingi always chose Yunho first.

Always.

So when Yunho treated everyone kindly, Mingi couldn’t stop feeling annoyed.

Not because Yunho did anything wrong.

Actually, that was the problem.

Yunho was too nice.

Too caring.

Too considerate.

He made everyone feel important.

And sometimes Mingi selfishly wanted to be more important than everyone else.

Yunho never understood why Mingi got upset.

But he always stayed beside him anyway.

Then there were Hongjoong and Seonghwa.

The weirdest pair in the group.

“Move.”

“No.”

“You’re annoying.”

“Look who’s talking.”

Everyone watching would assume they hated each other.

Until they noticed the small things.

The way Seonghwa automatically handed Hongjoong his drink before he asked.

The way Hongjoong remembered exactly how Seonghwa liked his tea.

The way they always ended up beside each other.

The way they understood each other without speaking.

They acted like enemies.

But everyone knew the truth.

Especially Jongho.

“Those two are ridiculous.”

“No argument there,” Yeosang agreed.

Life continued like that until Yeoju appeared.

She became friends with Seonghwa first.

The two bonded over their shared obsession with cleanliness and organization.

“What do you mean you organize your books by color?”

“It’s efficient.”

“No, it’s beautiful.”

“Exactly.”

Nobody else understood them.

But they understood each other perfectly.

Yeoju quickly became close with the rest of the group too.

San treated her like a younger sister one minute and an older sister the next.

They spent most of their time teasing each other.

Jongho followed her around constantly.

Yeoju treated him like an actual younger brother.

Yunho and Yeosang were always kind to her, which made her feel comfortable around them.

Hongjoong wasn’t particularly close with her, but they got along fine.

Mingi remained distant.

Not because he disliked her.

He simply wasn’t interested in expanding his social circle.

Everything seemed normal.

Except for one thing.

Yeoju acted strangely around Wooyoung.

Very strangely.

She greeted everyone warmly.

Except Wooyoung.

She smiled at everyone.

Except Wooyoung.

She held conversations with everyone.

Except Wooyoung.

Naturally, Wooyoung reached a conclusion.

“She hates me.”

San nearly choked on his drink.

“No.”

“She does.”

“No.”

“San.”

“I’m serious.”

“She literally ignores me.”

San looked away.

Because if he looked at Wooyoung’s face any longer, he was going to laugh.

The truth was simple.

Yeoju liked Wooyoung.

A lot.

Unfortunately, she was terrible at showing it.

Every time she saw him, she became awkward.

Every time he talked to her, she panicked.

Every time he smiled at her, her brain stopped functioning.

So instead of acting friendly, she acted cold.

Which only convinced Wooyoung that she hated him.

The situation continued for months.

Until one day.

Everyone was hanging out together when Jongho accidentally revealed the secret.

Actually, maybe it wasn’t completely accidental.

After months of watching Yeoju suffer, he was getting tired.

“So are you finally going to confess to Wooyoung or—”

The entire room froze.

Jongho froze.

Yeoju froze.

Wooyoung froze.

The silence was deafening.

Then Wooyoung slowly pointed at himself.

“Me?”

Yeoju wanted the floor to open and swallow her whole.

San immediately burst out laughing.

Seonghwa covered his face.

Hongjoong looked entertained.

Yunho looked shocked.

Mingi looked mildly interested for approximately three seconds before returning to his phone.

Yeosang nearly dropped his drink.

And Wooyoung?

Wooyoung looked completely confused.

“What?”

Nobody answered.

“What?”

Still silence.

Finally, Jongho sighed.

“She likes you.”

Yeoju closed her eyes.

Maybe if she stayed still enough, she would disappear.

Instead, she heard Wooyoung say,

“…Seriously?”

Weeks of embarrassment followed.

Yeoju couldn’t look Wooyoung in the eye.

The group wouldn’t stop teasing her.

San was the worst offender.

But eventually, something unexpected happened.

Wooyoung and Yeoju started talking.

Then talking more.

Then spending time together.

Slowly, the awkwardness disappeared.

And underneath all the misunderstandings, they discovered they actually got along really well.

Soon enough, they became genuine friends.

The group felt complete again.

Or almost complete.

One evening, while everyone was hanging out together, Wooyoung noticed something.

Yeosang was quieter than usual.

Not shy.

Not uncomfortable.

Just… distant.

And for the first time in months, Wooyoung realized how often he had left Yeosang behind.

All those times he chose San first.

All those times he forgot to include him.

All those moments Yeosang stood alone while Wooyoung ran ahead.

The realization hit harder than he expected.

Because Yeosang had never complained.

Never blamed him.

Never asked for anything.

He simply stayed.

Even when it hurt.

Later that night, Wooyoung sat beside him.

Yeosang looked up.

“What?”

Wooyoung hesitated.

Then quietly said,

“I’m sorry.”

Yeosang frowned.

“For what?”

“For being a bad best friend.”

The words caught Yeosang off guard.

Wooyoung looked genuinely guilty.

“I didn’t realize how much I’d been ignoring you.”

Yeosang stared at him for a long moment.

Then he smiled softly.

“You really are stupid.”

Wooyoung laughed.

“I know.”

There was no dramatic argument.

No tears.

No grand speech.

Just understanding.

The kind that only existed between people who had known each other forever.

From that day onward, things weren’t exactly the same.

They were better.

Wooyoung still spent time with San.

San was still one of his closest friends.

But now he made sure Yeosang never felt forgotten.

Yeosang stopped hiding his feelings behind silence.

Mingi slowly learned that Yunho’s kindness toward others didn’t make him any less special.

Hongjoong and Seonghwa continued acting like they hated each other while secretly taking care of one another.

Yeoju stopped pretending she disliked Wooyoung.

And Jongho continued watching over everyone like the unofficial guardian of the group.

Because friendships changed.

People grew.

Relationships became complicated.

But in the end, the people who truly cared about each other always found their way back.

And maybe that was what friendship really meant.

Not never drifting apart.

But choosing each other again, every time life tried to pull them in different directions. 🤍
