Chapter 1: First Day

Chapter Text

It’s the beginning of the school year and you find yourself sitting in your classroom once again. Your colleagues are mingling and chatting with each other, asking about how they spent their summer break and catching up while your homeroom teacher hasn’t arrived yet. Even though you thoroughly enjoyed your summer break, you’re also glad that you’re back at U.A.. Nothing can quite replace the feeling of chatting with your best friend during breaks and all the tinkering in the Development Studio.

Ever since you were little, it was very clear that you adored helping people in your own way. It may not have been the classic hero way of standing up for someone or scaring away a group of bullies, but a bit quieter. You’d fix someone’s pen when they complained about the ink getting jammed, untangle a zipper when it’d get tangled with a loose thread, find a way to reattach a broken keychain. You wouldn’t exactly win a star sticker from your teachers or get a lot of attention for it. But seeing someone’s day brighten just a little bit felt like enough. Not to mention that you didn’t mind getting crafty. In fact, it was one of the things you excelled at.

Your Quirk came in very handy whenever you’d indulge in another little project. Your doctor called it ‘Mind Projection’ back when you first developed it. A simple but fitting name. Whatever you visualized in your head, you could make a projection of, whether it was an object or a scene. It would be a 3D hologram hovering in front of you or above you. You could turn it and zoom in or out at will, making it perfect for when you were working on something or wanted to show someone a visual representation. Now instead of having to draw complicated diagrams and struggling to present something the way to wanted to, you could simply use your Quirk.

“Hey, what do you think the newbies are like?” Kaori, your best friend, asked as she turned around in her seat. Thankfully her desk is right in front of yours.

“Hm… I dunno, I guess it doesn’t really matter. We probably won’t run into them unless they really need help with some project,” you shrugged.

“Okay, yeah, but you’ve gotta be at least a little bit curious! I heard that there were three super flashy ones in the entrance exam!” As usual, Kaori stuck her nose where it didn’t really belong. She knew so many people and had so many connections that she could easily find out the latest drama and events in the school.

Before you had the chance to say anything, she went on. “Apparently there was this one kid that laid low all the way up till the end and then blasted the 0-point villain bot with one punch. Oh, and there’s another one that froze a bunch of bots and made whole glaciers, and another one with some kind of explosion Quirk that was flying all over the place−”

“I get it, I get it! They’re flashy and interesting,” you cut her off with a chuckle before she could talk your ear off again. “Sounds… chaotic.”

Truthfully, those were the most difficult types of Quirks to deal with as a supporter. They were aggressive, strong and hard to control. They could very easily mess up the majority of gadgets you’d make. It was frustrating, but you couldn't deny that it was an opportunity to gain more experience.

Then as your homeroom teacher came in, everyone quieted down and returned to their seats. It was the classic welcome-to-the-new-year talk. The class was given a quick rundown of what to expect and learn, a few motivational words and a wish for good luck.

The following few hours weren’t all that eventful or different. Each class had an introduction lesson with nothing too difficult to do, mostly reviewing old material to remind yourself where you left off before starting a new topic.

Soon enough, the bell rang for lunch break, and everyone went their own way. Some pulled out their bento box with their preferred lunch, some used their break to catch up on sleep, some went for a walk or to chat with friends, and some went to the cafeteria. You and Kaori happened to be ones of the latter.

The familiar Lunch Rush sign greeted the two of you and you could already see the wave of new faces. Most of them looked nearly dumbfounded upon entering the cafeteria, exchanging comments with their classmates and looking at all the food options excitedly. Sadly, but unsurprisingly, there was a decent line already formed. You were chatting with Kaori as you walked over, then suddenly bumped shoulders with someone.

“Oh, sorry−”

Watch where you’re going, extra!

It was safe to say that you were left stunned and quite a bit offended. You watched as the blonde boy stomped off, Kaori looking more devastated than you and hugging you to her side as if you were her hurt child. He was most definitely a 1st year. You would’ve remembered having an aggressive person like him in your generation.

“What a dickhead! Could’ve at least said sorry!” Kaori scoffed, shooting a glare at the back of his head before pulling you both back into line. “You okay?”

“Yeah, yeah, I’m fine,” you answered, more shocked than physically hurt. It was surprising how someone like him made it into the top hero school. Heroes were supposed to be polite and caring, not disrespectful and rude. Then you reminded yourself that it’s only the first day of school, and you didn’t want to have a pessimistic start. So you brushed it off the best you could and grabbed food with Kaori.

The two of you found free seats soon enough and started eating. Like always, U.A. didn’t disappoint with their food quality. Or quality in general, really. Everything was in the best conditions you could’ve asked for.

Halfway done with your food and listening to Kaori talk about everything, you heard a certain yell you got familiar with not too long ago. It took you one look over your shoulder to see that it was the same blonde boy picking another victim, although this one looked a bit more unfortunate. It was a shy looking boy with green hair that looked like he wanted the earth to swallow him. Meanwhile the blonde was shouting insults and shooting glares. What really caught your attention were the threatening little sparks in his palms.

“Looks like we found one of your ‘flashy newbies’,” you said to Kaori and nodded in the boy’s direction.

“What a bummer. No talking to him I guess,” she rolled her eyes and shoved another spoonful into her mouth. Of course she thought about making friends with the three flashy newbies she’d heard about. The day she stops socializing with every live human being in her vicinity is the day she dies. “His personality looks like his Quirk. Explosive.”

You chuckled and ate the last of your lunch. The rest of the day went by fast and it wasn’t long before you were parting ways with Kaori, each of you going to your homes.

You’ve officially started another hardworking year in U.A.

At least the 1st years will be dealing with themselves and no one else. Hopefully.
