Chapter Text

The fire in the great hall at Outlander had burned low by the time Jamie Fraser finally let himself sit.

The gathering at Lallybroch had lasted hours longer than intended. Ale had flowed freely, stories had grown louder, and music still drifted faintly from another room where the younger men refused to sleep. But here, in the quieter corner near the hearth, only Jamie, his uncles, and Claire remained.

Jamie Fraser leaned back carefully against the chair, one hand pressed unconsciously against his ribs. Across from him, Murtagh Fitzgibbons Fraser narrowed his eyes.

“You move like an old man,” Murtagh muttered.

Jamie huffed softly. “Thank ye kindly.”

“I mean it.”

Claire looked up from where she was winding fresh bandages. She’d noticed it too. Jamie had been stiff all evening, avoiding sudden movement, avoiding touch whenever someone came too close behind him.

Then Dougal strode in from the hall carrying another bottle.

Dougal MacKenzie stopped short. “Christ, ye all look miserable.”

“Jamie’s hiding an injury,” Murtagh said bluntly.

“I amna.”

“Aye, ye are.”

Dougal smirked faintly. “Still terrible at lying, lad.”

Jamie rolled his eyes, but the expression faltered when he tried to stand. Pain flashed openly across his face before he could hide it.

Claire was beside him immediately. “Jamie—”

“I’m fine.”

“You nearly collapsed.”

The room quieted.

Murtagh’s gaze sharpened further. “Take the shirt off.”

Jamie froze.

“No,” he said too quickly.

Dougal’s amusement vanished. “Jamie.”

“It’s nothing.”

Claire felt the panic before either uncle did. She saw it in the rigid line of Jamie’s shoulders, the way his breathing shortened.

“Jamie,” she said gently, “they care about you.”

His jaw tightened.

For a long moment nobody moved.

Then, with visible effort, Jamie reached for the laces of his shirt.

The fabric slipped from his shoulders.

Silence.

Murtagh stared.

Dougal swore under his breath.

The scars crossed nearly every inch of Jamie’s back — thick raised lines, old whip marks layered over newer injuries. Some had healed badly. Others still looked angry despite the months that had passed.

Claire had seen them many times. But seeing others witness them felt different somehow. More intimate. More painful.

Dougal stepped closer slowly, disbelief written plainly across his face.

“Jesus Christ…”

Murtagh looked as though someone had struck him.

“Black Jack Randall did this?” he asked quietly.

Jamie nodded once.

Neither man spoke for several seconds.

Then Dougal’s eyes dropped lower.

Additional scars.

Smaller.

Crueler.

Marks that did not come from a whip.

Jamie immediately grabbed for the discarded shirt.

Too late.

Murtagh caught his wrist gently.

“Jamie…”

The shame on Jamie’s face nearly broke Claire’s heart.

“It doesna matter,” Jamie whispered.

Dougal looked furious now in a way Claire had rarely seen — not loud anger, but something cold and murderous.

“What did the bastard do to ye?”

Jamie shook his head hard. “Leave it.”

“No.”

The single word from Murtagh carried surprising force.

Jamie swallowed. His eyes remained fixed on the floor.

Claire moved beside him, resting a hand against his arm.

“You don’t have to say anything you don’t want to,” she murmured.

But Jamie’s uncles were waiting silently now, horror and grief plain on their faces.

Finally Jamie spoke, voice rough.

“He wanted to break me.”

No one interrupted.

“At first it was the flogging. The beatings. Starving me.” His breathing hitched slightly. “But that wasna enough for him.”

Dougal’s knuckles whitened around the bottle in his hand.

Jamie continued without looking up.

“He… touched me. Forced me.” The words sounded dragged from somewhere deep and painful. “Used pain to make me obey him.”

Murtagh shut his eyes briefly.

Jamie laughed once — bitter and hollow.

“I thought if I died first, it would stop. But Randall enjoyed that too much.”

Claire squeezed his arm tighter.

Dougal turned away abruptly, pacing once across the room like he physically could not stand still.

“That filthy fucking monster—”

“He made me believe…” Jamie stopped speaking entirely for a moment. “Made me believe I was becoming like him. That wanting to survive meant I wanted…” He couldn’t finish.

“You were tortured,” Claire said firmly. “Nothing about it was your fault.”

Murtagh crouched in front of Jamie slowly, careful as one might approach a wounded animal.

“Look at me, lad.”

Jamie hesitated before finally lifting his eyes.

“There is no shame in surviving.”

Jamie’s face crumpled unexpectedly at that.

Not dramatic sobbing. Just exhaustion. Years of pride cracking under the weight of being seen.

Murtagh pulled him forward suddenly into a rough embrace.

Jamie stiffened at first out of instinct before slowly sagging against him.

Dougal stood nearby, eyes shining with restrained rage.

“If Randall were alive,” he said quietly, “I’d kill him slowly myself.”

Jamie let out a shaky breath.

Claire rested her hand against his back carefully, over scars that told stories nobody should ever have lived through.

For the first time since they’d arrived at Lallybroch, Jamie no longer looked alone with them.
