I've had this Ernest Chiriacka illustration sitting in my K/S inspiration folder for over a year, so when I saw this Tumblr post by @runraerun, I finally took it as the push I needed to make this piece happen, lol.

1950s illustrations (especially pulp art!) are probably my biggest stylistic inspiration. I love how they're still fairly realistic, but the facial expressions and body language already have that wonderfully dramatic comic-book energy. Recreating that look (or at least getting a little closer to it) was a lot of fun, and this artwork was a great excuse to experiment with a style that's more faithful to those inspirations :D

P.S. I originally wanted to do a quick piece to distract myself while Europe was melting under a +40°C (104°F) heatwave, but it somehow grew into something much more labor-intensive than I expected. So instead I nearly gave myself heat stroke while slowly baking alive in my non-air-conditioned apartment 😂

P.P.S. Yes, I know the insignia is technically supposed to be mirrored and on the right side of Spock's uniform because it's a reflection, bUT THE COMPOSITION!! It just looked so right there xD
