Alfiekate and Alfiekatehater were in their middle school hallway, uniforms dusted with dried paint after their afterschool art club.
They both had met just about a week ago, because they were in the same club.
Alfiekate had pretended not to notice its name, and forget about their history. Alfiekatehater was kind to them anyway. Right?
But Alfiekate knew from her parents's horrible stories about Alfiekatehater and its parents, and how this wouldn't end well.
" Hello, would you like to go get ice cream? " Alfiekatehater poked Alfiekate's shoulder with a small smile, trying to get her attention.
" Alfiekatehater, I really can't. I have to go.. " Alfiekate responded nervously, not meeting its eyes.
She seemed pained to say Alfiekatehater's name.
" How come? We spoke merely a week ago. " It offered a friendly smile that faltered.
There was a long period of silence as they stood there, staring at each other without movement. Until Alfiekate spoke up.
" I don't want you talking to me anymore. " Alfiekate murmured in the empty hallway.
Her parents wanted her perfect. No, she couldn't, wouldn't just ignore their wishes to stray from Alfiekatehater.
Alfiekatehater took a step back, eyebrows perked.
“ You wouldn’t like me to speak with you anymore? " It echoed.
" What the hell happened? "
It tilted its head, following up with another sentence.
" Alfiekate, please be rational- "
" I am! " She yelled, feeling as if the confines of the narrow hallway were closing in on herself.
With no answer from the other end, Alfiekate continued, scowling.
" You know our parents hate each other, right? Your name is quite literally:
‘Alfiekatehater.’" "
" It's clear you were born to hate me! Your parents made it clear to us both just by your stupid name! "
“ My name isn’t stupid. “ Alfiekatehater retorted.
" So that's what you're worried about?! If you can't even listen to me- "
" That is clearly not the only thing I'm worried about, did you even listen to a single thing that I said? "
The pair started to argue over each other, the misunderstanding growing into a life long grudge.
For now, they hated each other to the bone, they progressed into enemies.
But that isn't the only thing they had to be.
