“Have you seen the throne room?”
He has. A crack nearly down to the foundation, caused by a spell that onlookers said held more power than anything they had ever felt, that had left behind only the smoking bones of the assassin.

Defect. Defect. Defect. Ringing around the hollow of his skull, branding itself into his chest with each traitorous beat of his racing heart. His father's voice, terrifying and absolute— Lumera's voice, cold and hard, frightening in how little it matches the kind woman he met in the bitter wastes.
"Sorry— I'm sorry," he manages to spit out. The fear he should normally be able to suppress with ease overflows from that space outside himself where he normally tucks it away. It will only doom him further, but once he's begun to speak he finds he can't seem to stop himself from continuing in a voice that sounds like every defective sibling he's ever watched make blubbering excuses to Father for their failures. While Nel is much more open to trying, Rafal does not leap headfirst into the idea of being a brother to Alear and Veyle. He feels no kinship with them beyond a similarity of Fell blood. Still, he is willing to befriend them at least. Perhaps his feelings will change with time.
