Summary
Nobody talks much about the Noldor family anymore. Like saying any of their names aloud will bring their misfortune down upon the speaker: a lesson to be learned, a warning to be issued, a curse to be conjured.
The land where their farm once stood lies barren. It’s a desolate patch of scorched earth where even heartiest prairie grasses no longer wish to grow.
When anyone does dare to speak of them, they do so in hushed tones, furtive whispers behind closed doors and only in trusted company. The conversation is always the same: "Terrible, terrible business… Just goes to show, it’s dangerous living so far away from civilized life… Although… What if he was telling the truth… They never did find the body…"

“You’ve just been standing here this whole time?”
She swallows and nods.
Hal presses his lips into a tight line as he considers her, then, with a sigh, tilts his head toward the dance floor. “Come on, then.”
Galadriel’s heart stops. “What?” It’s hard to catch her breath.
“I think what he meant to say,” Bronwyn clarifies, staring daggers at him, “is ‘would you like to dance?’”
A rush of panic floods Galadriel. “Oh,” her pulse feels too loud, her cheeks are too hot, “I can’t— I mean, I don’t know how— I’ve never— well, not like that—“
“Don’t be silly,” Bronwyn says, giving her a gentle nudge toward him, “Hal can lead anybody.”
“Well?” His hand remains outstretched as he waits for a real response. “It’s now or never.”

When Halbrand stumbles into her bar, Galadriel cannot deny the attraction between them. She has a rule about not sleeping with customers, but perhaps she can make an exception for this dangerous man with a secret past. With the threat of the mafia looming, will Halbrand be the ally she needs or will his darkness corrupt them both?

She couldn’t afford any distractions right now, however…and Halbrand was most definitely distracting.
“I don’t sleep with customers,” she told him, trying to maintain a professional tone.
Halbrand was unphased by this statement. “It’s a good thing I haven’t paid for this drink then,” he mused, holding his glass aloft.
Galadriel’s frown faltered, the corners of her mouth quirking up. “I don’t sleep with thieves either.”
Halbrand’s low chuckle sent a ripple of arousal through her body, a sudden heat pooling between her thighs. He tossed back the rest of his drink, tongue swiping across his lower lip to capture an errant drop of liquor.
“Then I guess I’ll have to buy a second drink…” he murmured. He pulled a wad of cash from his pocket, placing a large bill on the counter with a smirk. “...if I want to continue to enjoy the pleasure of your company.”

“Well, I can’t have that,” Halbrand tells her, and he downs the rest of his draft before placing the empty glass back down onto the bar with a thud. He pulls out his wallet and pays for it. “I’d feel really bad if I left you stranded out here,” he starts to say, tucking his wallet back into his pocket, “so what’s our heading, princess?”
Galadriel’s eyes grow wider, and she finally looks at him. “Our heading?” she asks, like she doesn’t know what he means when she does.
Halbrand nods his head. “Yes, our heading. Where are we going next?”
“We?”
Halbrand meets her eyes, seeing the slight flush deepening the apples of her cheeks. Some of it’s alcohol. Some of it’s embarrassment. Some of it might just be because she finds him attractive if her little lip biting is anything to go by. “Yes,” he agrees firmly, “we. We’re out here together right now, aren’t we? Why not make the most of it?”

Galadriel goes out drinking after a bad breakup, and Halbrand shows up to put all the pieces back together.

A burst of light burns Galadriel’s vision. “If you know what brought me here, why demand that I speak it?”
Halbrand turns to her, eyes tracing a serpentine path along her body. “If I am to tempt the powers above to smite me— at your behest— then, at the very least, you might simply grant me this, Galadriel.”
“It is never simple with you,” she says through gritted teeth.
“Would you like to find another necromancer?” he asks, refilling his glass.
If any were known to her, she would have already departed.

The moment his sentence was handed down – Halbrand “Sauron” Maia, guilty, life plus 30 years — brought up on RICO charges, 14-counts of conspiracy to commit murder and racketeering. It would have been a death sentence to anyone else. Hell, moments after the verdict was read in a federal courthouse in Brooklyn, hundreds of his supporters stormed the building, overturned furniture, a wave of riots in the streets, smashing cars and storefront windows, violently being forced back by police reinforcements.
But the moment of his sentencing? His green eyes had cut to hers — unflinching, direct. He’d looked across the crowded courthouse directly to the person who’d landed him in prison, and he hadn’t looked angry either. Face stoic, not a glimpse of any hidden turmoil, not even one of accusation that he could have so easily aimed at her. She watched him get handcuffed and marched away, and he didn’t break eye-contact until he’d been physically forced to, turning away only when the guards paraded him out of the room to the sound of clicking cameras.
It was real Alpha shit, Galadriel knew.

“Yes,” Galadriel breathes. “I did.”
“I couldn’t stop thinking about that,” he admits, running a hand through his hair. “You said that if someone had been willing to treat them earlier, then maybe your brother would still be alive. You made it seem like there’s a chance things might get better. Like violence isn’t just an unfortunate inevitability encoded into someone's being.”
“In a sense,” she laughs softly, “I’ve devoted my entire life to my brother’s murderer— at least, professionally speaking.”
“It’s just too bad they were never caught,” he muses. “Who knows what else they might’ve gotten up to?”

The DEA does next to nothing after Galadriel's brother Finrod is murdered after the resurgence of the Darkness Cartel in southern New Mexico. With few leads and even less hope, she scours local records to try and discover Morgoth's successor who she suspects is using the reintroduced wild Lobos as cover for their underground operation. Drowning in despair, she bumps into Halbrand at a coffee shop.
Nine months later, Detective Elrond Peredhil combs what little they have on file as he opens a missing persons case for Galadriel Noldor.
