The last shot is accompanied by the trail of a cry, shrill, angry, fearful. Arthur lowers his revolver. Blinks. Tongues at a bloody tooth from getting hit while strangling an O’Driscoll, spits red mucus onto one of the bodies on the floor.
The crying starts up again, as if sensing Arthur’s confusion. For a moment, Arthur thinks it must be some poor lady these savages have taken alongside the house, but quickly knows it to be untrue. It’s too—wet, pointless in a way only the young can manage, knowing that something is wrong but not knowing what. Just a shout, not the bellowing anguish of someone who knows what god-awful situation they have been put in.
“Christ,” he says, once, twice. “Christ.”

Arthur accidentally adopts a baby, and, despite his best judgement, ends up starting to raise him. He falls in love with Charles along the way.

Arthur could hear the smile behind Dutch’s words. A part of him ached. “Why now?”
There was a mutual understanding of the question. Whenever they’d pondered about the relentlessness of the world, the why-nows, it was usually spent debating on what started the latest bar fight, why they can't go back to whichever town, or how did so-and-so get himself killed. Each time they concluded without a true answer. There was only moving on. When a minute passed and Dutch still sat silent, idly petting his right hand over his spine, it was clear that now was no exception. But unlike past circumstances, this moment carried with it an unfamiliar tenderness that Arthur had no idea where to bury.Dutch offers Arthur a back rub. It goes according to plan.

Arthur pushes the sleeve up to Dutch's elbow, resting his fingers against warm skin, content to sink into the sensation for a minute. It might remind Dutch that Arthur's human, too.
Then he pulls Dutch's arm down until the gun is pointed at his mouth. He licks the tip of the barrel.
"Jesus, son!" Dutch hisses, something electric running down his spine as he tightens his grip on Arthur's face. He tells himself that this is a shock, and not exactly what he'd had in mind since he'd aimed the revolver at Arthur.
