Steve knew death.
He had faced it enough over the last years to know the feeling. But Steve never would have thought that his death would come like this: slow and painful. Cancer was a whole new thing.
.....So, Steve gets cancer, and he doesn't know how to deal with it, until he figures out he has people to support him. It takes time though.

One day Steve will find Eleven and actually tell her the truth, or maybe Eleven will find Steve and figure it out herself. It'll happen eventually, but in the meantime Steve has kids to look over and a relationship to figure out.
That's if he can make it that far. Winter has its own surprises waiting for them.

It doesn’t matter that he gets virtually no sleep, or that his grades are at an all-time low. It doesn’t matter that he jumps at absolutely everything and that he thinks he’s going crazy.
