They rekindled their friendship almost immediately despite him thinking it would take some time. Now that she's returned, he won't let this chance slip away.

The letters also shed light on some of her son's unspoken feelings for one of his classmates.
Rei held out her arms and that familiar warmth settled into her stomach. Shouto's limbs wound around his mother; she hugged him. Probably smothered him. But, it had been too long. And hugging him always felt like maybe, maybe this time….
If she held him the right way. If she hugged him long enough. She could undo the damage she had done.
But, then he'd pull away. And her baby would be gone, again. The face of a teenaged boy looked at her with guarded eyes. Scarred, but not broken. Damaged, but healing....
