When he blinks, in the space of the moment between himself and the light, he can almost picture a future in which they had been.

Summary
"What are you-" Occtis's question was cut off into a startled yelp as Julien bent down and scooped him up. He was right that Occtis basically weighed nothing.
"You are in no fit state to walk," he said in a voice that he hoped would broker no argument from the boy. He just wanted this errand over with.
Occtis, thankfully, kept his mouth shut, just closing his eyes and letting himself be carried down the street and up the front steps into the red brick building. Julien briefly considered putting him down once they were inside, but Occtis already looked to be dozing and he had no faith in his ability to not pass out in the hallway and get beaten and robbed or worse.

Summary
The obnoxious Tachonis boy kept repeating everything Julien said, and Julien could not fathom why. Regardless, whatever game Occtis was playing was the last irritation he needed on top of a deeply unpleasant day, and the explanation offered was utterly ludicrous. Julien was fluent in both languages used by his house and had no reason to confuse them.
(When Julien's thoughts are clouded by injury/illness, one language comes more readily to his tongue than the other. Unfortunately, not the one he has in common with his companions.)

Summary
The last thing Julien ever wished to see as he stumbled drunk into the first guestroom door was the Tachonis boy asleep on the bed, laid out beneath the crisp sheets like the corpse he is.
A necromancer of the Famed House Tachonis, huh?
Despite the cold gauntness that clings to the boy, Occtis still looks… harmless. Thaisha had done a fairly good job cleaning him up, but Julien’s eyes catch streaks of blood she missed in his hair. Julien feels a strange sort of impulse to fetch a cloth and wash it out himself, which passes like a wave crashing over the rocks (he has a strange inclination that it will return if he overstays his welcome in this room).
Or: Julien is drunk, grieving, and is (against his will) worried Occtis is cold. Occtis is failing to sleep.
