Summary
The second time Stede left Mary and his family on land it was during the day during a Sunset and with their blessing to live a life worth something.
Stede was going to do that. Even if it killed, what else did he have to live for but Ed?
When Stede found his crew again he was more surprised at their reaction to his face than he first assumed. No one else had ever really cared for his beauty aside from him passively meeting the beauty standards and being this side of conventionally attractive.
If any one of them asked Stede how it happened he couldn’t answer. He couldn’t remember every time he thought about it was just a passive pressure on his brain. And a slick feeling in his eye.
Even with that Stede's looks were average. Looks weren't his focus and they didn't need to be. There were more important things Stede had been focusing on in his mind: he had to get another ship and they had to go find Ed and they had to make sure that Stede apologized.
Because Stede needed to apologize though he couldn't remember what for.

“Stede, what’s wrong? You look…not great, if I’m honest, man,” Ed says, one hand still resting on top of Stede’s, his thumb stroking gently back and forth. Stede looks — well, there’s no word for it other than terrified, and it’s only a slight consolation that the fear doesn’t seem to be directed at Ed.
Ed doesn’t know if he could handle it if Stede were ever truly afraid of him.

Summary
“You don’t have to do this,” Stede chokes out, half-muffled, face still concealed, his words muffled by the press of his mouth to his forearm.
“Do what?” Ed asks him.
“Be in here with me,” Stede tells him. The space is small; Ed only needs to take two steps before he’s next to him. Standing over him feels wrong, somehow, but Stede’s not moving, and he doesn’t want to piss him off or upset him. “I’ll be fine in a minute. I just needed to— to take a moment. I’m fine.”
Every word that chokes up out of him is tight and strained and pained-sounding. His breath hitches again, and he shakes his head, seemingly at nothing, before his arms clench tighter and he squeezes himself closer.
Just looking at him like this has something thick expanding in Ed’s throat. He can’t keep looming over him like this, and he can’t leave him here to suffer whatever’s going on alone, so. He takes a seat beside him, folding himself up so he can sit on the floor in the space just next to Stede, one shoulder pressed into the wall, the other nearly brushing Stede’s.
