Summary
"First," said Gale. "Do not kill any thinking creatures in Waterdeep unless you must to protect yourself or you have my express permission."
As Gale spoke, he could feel the weight of his words sinking into the person sitting across from him. It was like casting a spell, but took no effort. Astarion had been staring hollowly into his goblet of blood, but at this he made a faintly interested noise. As if the rule were novel and he was considering the shape of it.
"Second, you will obey me in all things," said Gale. There didn't feel like there was any honest way of softening that. Astarion didn't make any sound at all.
"Third, do not leave the tower without permission." Astarion made another speculative noise, considering this one too. But then his shoulders hunched and his eyes skittered down, as if he didn't want to look at what was about to happen.
"Fourth," Gale said, and paused. He started with some context: "There is a tressym upstairs."
Astarion's head twitched. He looked up at Gale, blinking, startled. He had the air of someone who had been bracing for a blow and instead had just been handed a balloon animal.
"A what?" he asked.

Summary
He tastes her. She sighs his name, the breathy sigh of a dream. When he tastes her again, she says his name with the half-clarity of the half-awake.
“’starion,” she says. “Did I start ’lready?”
Astarion slakes his thirst on Karlach's blood in more ways than one.

Summary
"There's more writing on the bottom of the bowl," Shadowheart said. She was crouched down and pointing to markings on the underside of the creepy, bloodstained altar.
"Is there? What does it say?" Gale asked, shuffling on his knees to get closer to where she was pointing.
"He's going to crawl around like this and then complain about his knees all the way back to camp," Astarion muttered, sounding half amused and half exasperated. Karlach chuckled just a little, because he was right. Talk about being your own worst enemy: Gale versus his knees and back.
"It says 'within each self a monster'," Shadowheart read off of the underside of the bowl.
"Oh, this is very interesting," Gale said. "The blood spilled in the bowl will touch the other phrases, but not this one. I think that marks it as optional. I've heard of something like this before. Azuth set out trials for young mages where one could mark certain incantations with chalk and leave others blank, indicating how difficult a challenge one was willing to face."
"This would make the trial harder?" Shadowheart asked, straightening. "A more difficult test?"

Undead cannot become mindflayers. A living mind is required to be a host, and vampire spawns don't have one.

Summary
Three commands has Astarion broken, and now the fourth with a rapier through his gut and crossbow to his skull. Centuries he's wanted to be free—well, here it is. Dirt under his nails and blood behind his fangs. He's free. Isn't he fucking satisfied?
Astarion has not been a person in two hundred years. His journey to become one does not start off well.

Summary
It goes something like this: Astarion wakes up flat in the dirt, hands tied behind his back, bleeding. His head aches.
Wyll stands over him, uncharacteristically scared. "Astarion," he says, fast and frantic. "Are you back to yourself?"
There are two puncture wounds on his neck.
(It goes something like this: Astarion wakes up. The party says he attacked them. He does not remember this.)

Summary
"Volo," said Tav.
"Would taste like blackstaff wine," Astarion said. "Boisterous, bright, and unbalanced."
"I like that," said Tav. She was sprawled on cushions, sorting through their supplies for dinner. "Different from the namesake, but it works. Your turn."
"The hag," Astarion suggested.
"Oh gods," said Tav. "That's an interesting one. Something that starts lovely, but with an awful surprise. Elverquisst, but there's a rotting fish at the bottom of the bottle."
----
A troupe-master bard is plucked up by the Nautiloid. She transitions from directing plays to directing an adventuring party and becomes immediate chaos-gremlin-besties with the rogue. This has a number of almost disastrous consequences and involves far more talking about feelings than any vampire should reasonably be expected to do.
A story about a bunch of traumatized people becoming better, because that can happen when you find yourself in a new place and suddenly have a support network.

Summary
"He's going to kill you, pet." Mizora leans down, ghosting her hand over the trancing Astarion. "He'll tear out that pretty throat of yours."
Wyll grits his teeth. "Don't pretend like you care about me."
She laughs, throaty and rich. "Who else will?"
In which Wyll falls in love with a monster, and nothing is as it seems.

Summary
Disciple Z'rell doesn't look at him. She doesn't have to.
These people are heroes, her tadpole hisses, though her face stays blank and apathetic. They do not serve. But you? I could believe it.
Astarion swallows. The shrieking animal in his chest flinches back. You could?
I could. Z'rell drags her gaze over the assembled party, over five perfect, star-wrought heroes. If you prove it.
Astarion kills Karlach.
Things do not get better from there.

Summary
He wanted to retch, but he didn't want to lose the blood and he was afraid of being ill too loudly. The others might hear and Lae'zel might make good on her promise. Was this bad blood or ceremorphosis? Can't be too careful and he wasn't in a position to object. You needed to be able to stand and see clearly to argue with a gith and a greatsword. Snicker-snack and then the party would just use magic to open locked chests.
That's how the world worked. Bad things happened when people saw that you were weak.

Summary
When he wakes, he is on a beach, gold, looking up at the sun.
Ah, he thinks, distant. I'm dreaming.
Astarion is never quite sure, until the moment Cazador lies dead before him, whether this entire adventure is anything more than an extremely vivid hallucination.

Summary
He never quite stopped sleeping with a weapon however, nor with his hand far from it. So when he feels the slightest touch in the night, Wyll doesn’t think. There is no time for thinking in a matter of life or death.
He reacts.
Wyll immediately curls his hand around his blade and throws his body against his mystery opponent. There’s a cry of surprise and Wyll takes advantage of that surprise, immediately pinning them under him with his body weight and pointing his blade inches from their neck.
It’s only then, with his opponent deathly still from under him, does Wyll’s mind catch up to him. He’s straddled a humanoid figure, one that trembles under him with their hands up in surrender. And with his Devil’s Sight— a regrettably useful gift from Mizora— Wyll realizes that he recognizes this figure.
(Or Wyll has been ambushed in his sleep before. When Astarion attempts to get a quick bite in, he is met with the instincts of a monster hunter.)

Summary
Marcus holds the goblet up, still stinking with klauthgrass, and ponders them, clutched in the wretched claws of his undead monsters. "Well," he says, and smiles. "If you will not willingly drink it, I have a manner of encouragement."
And then he raises his dagger, pricks his own wrist until scarlet pools over his pale skin, and lets blood drip into the goblet.
Before he can help it, Astarion stiffens.
Astarion has spent two hundred years with truth as a bitter enemy. Fitting, then, that his choice to say it is taken from him.

Summary
Astarion's hands started to move. Opening and closing. Flinching up to his chest in quick, aborted motions. Like he was trying to stop something. Starting to protect himself but but unable to complete the motion. He made a noise. A whining complaint.
Nightmare, Tav thought. That wasn't really a surprise, given the little she knew about him. She scooted closer and reached out to shake him awake.
But then Astarion made another noise. It was so quiet Tav could barely hear it. She wouldn't have, if she hadn't moved close. It was so much softer than any sound he ever made while awake. Something halfway between a gasp and a sob. Stifled, like he was trying not to be heard.

Summary
Karlach squatted down next to Gale.
"Hey," she said. "I've got a...what's it. Like a guess, but fancy?"
"Do you perhaps mean a theory?" Gale asked.
"That's it," Karlach said. "I wanna test a theory."
"I'm always interested in experimentation." Gale gestured invitingly. "Please, go ahead."

Summary
He screams, unholy and pitched and ripped from him like something desperate. He beats against the stone though he knows it will do nothing but hurt him, his head already fuzzy from the pain, blood coated behind his teeth and tangled in his curls. He might even cause the rock to crush him, should he wriggle any further.
Perhaps it’d be merciful enough to kill him. It would be preferable to being stuck here in the invasive quiet and the dark, helpless and unable to fight his way out.
A year of silence—he could not bear to do it again.
(Or, Astarion is trapped beneath rubble. Gale comes to his rescue.)
