Comment on Release Notes for Release 0.9.11

  1. I'm so sorry but I thought I'd replied to this.

    It does answer my question, thanks so much. But I have another question. What do you mean by switching suffixes on tags? As far as I know, the wranglers handle these and then autocomplete gives the user canonical tags, am I right?

    1. Hi, Elizabeth!

      This was something we were doing already, but we wanted to make sure current practices were spelled out in the ToS as it does affect user content. In the basic Guidelines, we note one of the concepts on tags is "Uniqueness":

      Each tag, regardless of type, must have a unique name. If a tag is created that duplicates the name of an existing tag, the wrangulator will automatically add an affix to the new tag. An example of this is "Veronica Mars": the unmarked tag is a Character tag, so using it in another field, the wrangulator will automatically add "- Fandom", "- Relationship", or "- Freeform", as appropriate.

      By switching suffixes, all we're doing is correcting the wrangulator code's mistakes. If someone accidentally put the first use of "Sam Q. Smith" in, say, the Relationship Tags field, the wrangulator code would make the tag a Relationship Tag. If someone then manually entered "Sam Q. Smith" in the Character field, the wrangulator would create it as "Sam Q. Smith - Character". We the wrangling staff assume the character is the intended primary usage, and would have to manually change:

      • Relationship: "Sam Q. Smith" -> "Sam Q. Smith - Relationship"
      • Character: "Sam Q. Smith - Character" -> "Sam Q. Smith"

      For code reasons, we aren't able to just change the tag's category.

      If you have any more questions, you can always ask here or via Support!

      Best,
      Sam J.

      1. Oh yeah, I remember now! I'd just forgotten that wranglers do this too. I remember this was explained to users when the site was new. I can't believe 5 years have passed already.

        Thanks so much for your reply!
