‘“What the hell are you doing?!”
She is stirred from her madness by Byakuya’s strong hand grabbing her wrist and wrenching the scissors from her hand. She locks eyes with her own manic reflection in the mirror on her vanity and sees that there are tears streaming down her face. She stares at the mess she has made of herself. Her once beautiful hair now hangs ragged and uneven around her ears.
“Cutting my hair” she says simply, as if that even begins to cover what’s happening.
“Why would you do something like this to yourself?” he asks her redundantly.
“Because I don’t know what else to do!” she shrieks, making Byakuya flinch with the raw emotion in her voice.’Rukia receives unexpected counsel from her usually detached older brother over a haircut in the aftermath of Ichigo losing his Shinigami powers and becoming unable to see her.

""Rukia's just getting changed" she heard Ichigo inform his girlfriend as the two of them moved through the maze of boxes into the kitchen "She'll be out in a bit and then we can order something in. I think she said she wanted to try ordering from that new pizza place around the corner. She wasn't fond of the fried chicken we had last time."
"Oh, Kuchiki-san is here is she?" Orihime said. Rukia didn’t miss the thinly-veiled disappointment in the young woman's tone.
"Yeah she just arrived. Good timing too, that rain looks like it's going to get nasty" Ichigo replied, unfazed.
"It's just... I thought it was going to be the two of us tonight. I wanted to stay over..." Orihime trailed off."Rukia gets the impression Orihime isn't too pleased with her and Ichigo's living arrangements.

"Oh my god," he thought, the faintest hint of lucidity pushing through the haze of insanity that gripped him, "What the hell is wrong with me?"'Ichigo has trouble keeping away from Rukia after he rescues her from her execution.

""So she's gonna be okay then?"
The sound of Kurosaki's voice makes him jerk. He wonders idly how long the boy has been standing there, waiting for news about Rukia’s condition.
"She is stable at the very least" he replies "There's nothing to be done but wait now."
That answer seems to satisfy him, and he nods.
"Can I go in and see her?" he asks, but he knows it's not really a question, it's a courtesy. They both know there's precious little Byakuya could do to stop him if he wanted to see Rukia. Nevertheless, they continue with the pretense and Byakuya opens the door."
Byakuya and Ichigo tend to Rukia in the aftermath of her fight with the Bount in the Soul Society and some complex conversation topics arise.Series

""Where did you find that nail polish?" Ichigo asked, taking Yuzu's other hand and examining it carefully.
"In the bathroom cupboard" Rukia answered, a look of deep concentration on her face as she finished off Yuzu's little pinky "It was nearly dried up but we gave it a few shakes and we got some out of it."
A memory, buried deep inside Ichigo's consciousness rose to the surface, of his mother shaking up the bottle and singing to herself as she painted her nails red. He remembered begging her to paint his to match hers, and her giving in with an indulgent smile.
"Red just like strawberries!" she'd told him, kissing his hands once she had finished.
“Just like you mammy!” he’d replied with delight. "
Ichigo's internal struggle with his Hollow starts to take its toll on him and Rukia is there to offer a little comfort.

He had been sitting there for hours now, shifting through the chaos of old toys, dog-eared books and clothes that no longer fit him with ruthless efficiency and disposing of them into black bags, piling up the things he planned to keep at the head of the bed. She noticed that anything that belonged to her went straight into a cardboard box without so much as a second look. "
Rukia watches a powerless Ichigo from the shadows as he cleans out his closet.

"You - Fool! What are you doing sneaking around so early?" she hissed at him.
"I was going to the bathroom and I felt your reiatsu spike" the ginger-haired substitute Soul Reaper murmured defensively in response "Why are you even awake anyway?"
"Woke up. Couldn't get back to sleep" she replied.
“Che. Same as ever. I don’t remember you ever sleeping through a whole night in my closet” he said, sliding the door shut behind him."Rukia and Ichigo share a moment in the early hours of the morning and catch up after their time apart.

"...They do not, in fact, wake up early the next morning because neither of them remember to set an alarm. The argument over who’s fault it is lasts the entire bus journey to Karakura Station and shows no signs of stopping as they board the train bound for Shinjuku. It’s all so familiar - the spike in her blood pressure, the tension headache building behind her eyes, the exasperation creeping into her tone - that it makes her laugh to herself in the middle of the packed express train.
“What are you smiling at?” he snaps when he sees her shoulders shaking silently.
“Nothing, nothing. I’m sorry, it’s my fault. I should have set an alarm” she says finally, and her apology confuses him into silence for the next three train transfers..."After Ichigo regains his shinigami powers, he and Rukia reconcile with a daytrip to Tokyo, but will they have the heart to heart Rukia has been dreading?

"On her first night in her new assignment, Rukia and her beloved lieutenant Kaien-dono come across the victims of Grand Fisher's attack. Upon learning the surviving soul's identity, Kaien-dono brings him back to the Shiba estate with him, setting off a chain of events that no one could have anticipated.
