Summary
Being a school for the gifted, it had always been a competitive environment.
But when L requested it be made into a feeder system for his successorship, the competition had increased tenfold—looking at it from the courtyard, Roger knew that the building had stayed the same; that the walls stood the way they always had, and that the gate had rusted only slightly, yet the school itself had become a stranger to him.
And every year, the same thing was happening to the students.

Roger had begun to wonder, infrequently at first, if he was praying to an empty sky, if there was any point to what he was doing. When he was young, he could have easily rebounded from it; life had been easy, once, and he had been able to see everything with compassion.
He had a gift, he had been told, for comforting the troubled and the weak. He had only wanted to share that when he took his vows; he had only wanted to help.
But he had put up with so many of the world’s horrors, so many preventable deaths, so many unspeakable crimes.
