This is an alternate version of the Jedi Apprentice novels, taking place about half-way through them. It involves a loving, disciplinary relationship between Qui-Gon Jinn and his apprentice, Obi-Wan.

The Jedi Apprentice stories involve a young Obi-Wan Kenobi and the early days of his apprenticeship with Qui-Gon Jinn. In the first book, Obi-Wan is a month away from his 13th birthday, at which time he will be turned out of the Temple if he hasn't been taken on as a Padawan. Qui-Gon Jinn is apprentice-less and has refused to take another Padawan since his second one - named Xanatos - went over to the Dark Side. Obi-Wan is shipped out to the mining world of Bandomeer to work with the AgriCorps and, by coincidence, Qui-Gon is also being sent to Bandomeer on the same ship to negotiate mining disputes. During the first book, they fight against the Hutt and draigons, and during the second book they fight against Xanatos, Qui-Gon's former apprentice, who is trying to take over the planet. Needless to say, by the end of the second book Qui-Gon takes Obi-Wan as his Padawan.
