Summary
He listens to Enjolras swallow, thinks about the long line of his neck bobbing with nervousness. Grantaire swallows, too.

Summary
Along his forehead and the back of his neck, his blond curls are damp with sweat. “Brother Grantaire.”
(It is always Brother Grantaire, until they touch themselves or one another and Enjolras loses track of the title somewhere on Grantaire’s tongue.)

Summary
Instead he slides onto his knees, slots himself between Enjolras’s legs the best that he can with cumbersome robes--and when did these clothes get so warm and too heavy--and their mouths collide again in a gasp, and the grasp that Enjolras has on the back of his neck is hard enough to bruise and he’ll have to wear his cowl for at least a few days to hide purple fingerprints.

Summary
He could content himself with this, he considers. A shadow, a shade, that disappears in the sometimes-light of the sun. It is a way to persist in something called an existence, aided by swigs of consecrated wine. He makes himself continue to work on the library’s manuscripts. and that is something, too, he supposes. Most nights he goes to sleep with paint in his hair, and recalls the smudges of red and blue he’d last left along Enjolras’s thighs

Summary
Grantaire is shaken and he tries to hide it. This is unfamiliar, that coil of tenderness secreted away in Enjolras’s words--though they were bestowed stiffly--and far more terrifying than coldness or rigidity or arguments or any of the damning touches they have exchanged. He wants to bring them back to familiarity, perhaps with a barb of some sort, but something else spills out instead. “You may give me Extreme Unction, now, if you wish it. Brother Joly claims I am still ill, after all. Perhaps my body is wanting of God’s forgiveness yet.”
Neither of them hear the innuendo in the low of his voice.

Summary
Further hesitation, as Enjolras watches Grantaire give an almost-imperceptible nod of understanding, and thrusts his arms back further, bare chest out. And Grantaire feels wooden beads looped around his wrist once, twice, and then three times. Loose enough that if he truly struggles, his hands could slip from the makeshift binding. Grantaire does not struggle, and his head and shoulders fall forward and meet stone.

Summary
It is some difficult maneuvering, but Grantaire scrambles into Enjolras’ lap and curls his fingers in his hair, thumbs brushing against his ears. Enjolras is less hasty, but wraps his arms around him and pulls him closer. His tongue traces around Grantaire’s lips and then inside, around his teeth and the roof of his mouth, and Grantaire feels somewhat precious for perhaps the first time in his life. The sound of their breathing seems louder in the enclosed space of the confessional, right where God can hear them join together.
