Summary
Ten is waiting for him, just like she said she would be. She’s leaning with her back against one of the tall stone columns of the entrance and looking at her phone.
He thinks he might have been in love with her since the first time he ever saw her, but he knows he’s been in love with her since the Christmas concert. He was in Year 7, still fresh to big school and not quite settled in yet. He doesn’t think there’s been a day since then that he hasn’t felt a lurch in his stomach every time he saw her, whether at school or at home or on his phone, smiling with Johnny’s arm around her waist.
And now he’s here, in her adopted hometown, and she’s going to show him around before his open day tomorrow.

Summary
Ten looks up when he gets to the little steps where she's waiting and beams at him. The butterflies fill his entire torso until he can't breathe for a moment.
Fuck, he's missed her so much.
She pulls him into a kiss as soon as he's within arms reach, warm palms cupping his cheeks while his find her waist like they belong there. Her lips taste of strawberries and it makes his stomach clench pleasantly at the way the taste is associated with her kisses.

Summary
Mark is standing in front of the wall of shelves dedicated to festive chocolates feeling overwhelmed. He wants to get Ten something nice, not just the usual sweets like he has for Johnny. He turns to his Mum.
“What’s a good box of chocolates to get for a girl?” He asks.
“Mark, have you found a girl at uni that you’ve not told me about?” She coos, and moves the trolley so she can come and nudge him playfully with her hip.
He fights the urge to squirm and manages to roll his eyes at her while she laughs.
“It’s just for Ten. We’ve been hanging out a bit, I’m going to see her and Johnny tomorrow.”

Summary
“I hope you were paying attention in your lectures, but it doesn’t sound like it.”
“I was paying attention. But I’m paying attention to you now," Mark says.
Ten gives him a pleased little smirk and puts his hands on her waist while she wraps her arms around his neck. She has to stand on her tiptoes to kiss him but she stops with her lips a few centimetres away from his. Another whine gets stuck in his throat.
“Good answer,” she says before she finally kisses him.

Summary
Ten is writing her dissertation. She’s taken over the table between the kitchen and the lounge, piles of books around her that all have a spray of coloured tabs sticking out of them, looking like some sort of modernist flower arrangement. By now there’s enough of them on the table that they’ve started to form battlements and a fortress wall around her laptop – sometimes the only reason Mark knows she’s still sat there is because he can see her feet nervously tapping under the table.
In a word, Ten is stressed. Mark doesn't know how to make it better for her, but he'll try.

Summary
Ten is alone in the flat and he’s sitting here in a shitty pub with sticky floors when he could be with her. He hadn’t planned on going over tonight, but as soon as the thought is in his head he can’t see past it — why would he go back to the house he shares with the boys to be on his own when he could be with Ten.

Summary
“Don't be nervous baby, I'll take care of you. Don't I always look after you?” She says softly.
There's a sharp twist deep in Mark's belly, embarrassment and love and relief and something else he doesn't have a name for all mixing together until his cheeks burn. He just swallows heavily and nods at her as she crosses the carpet and climbs onto the bed beside him.

Summary
Ten rolls her eyes but doesn't lose her smile, so Mark knows that she's not annoyed at him. “Nothing about these costumes actually make sense. When it comes to Halloween you only have two options.”
“Trick or treat?”
Ten's head thunks down onto his shoulder and he can feel her laughing against him. “No, Marky. Silly or sexy. And you're definitely sexy.”
“Oh.” His stomach flutters pleasantly. Not the costume, not the jacket. Him. “That's good, then.”

Summary
They wind their way through the streets, Ten still giggling and crashing into Johnny’s side every other step like she’s doing it on purpose. Johnny just holds on and laughs with her, pulling her away from the curb whenever she strays a little too close.
They only make it up one more street until Ten stops, holding onto his wrist.
“Fuck John, I really really need to go.”

Summary
They’ve been doing this, whatever it is, long enough – nearly a year now – that they should be…better at it. But they’re not. Or maybe Mark isn’t. Ten is perfectly happy – she has two boyfriends who worship the ground she walks on. But there is something between him and Johnny, he can feel it, something that goes beyond Johnny finding him to be an annoyance and a burden to be around, and beyond even jealousy about having to share his girlfriend. Mark still catches Johnny staring at him, and there is something in his eyes that Mark can’t place. Something that scares him.
