Xavier kneels, her hand sliding from his wrist to his upper arm. She squeezes his bicep as her eyes plead with him. "Please, stay."
"Mikki..."
"Stay with me."
"You don't know what you're asking," he says, shaking his head. He knows if he doesn't leave now, his self-control will slip and the line they've been walking for weeks will finally be crossed.
"I do."

Rafayel takes Mikki to an underwater gallery exhibit and things get *heated* when someone slips something in his drink.
"So, you're not taking me to your room to have your way with me?"
Rafayel turns and gives her a deadpan look. "'Have my way with you'? No, Scarlett, I'm not going to ravage you like a barbarian."
"But you want to."
His breath catches in his throat like she's just punched him in the gut. As much as he wants to, he can't lie to her. He tries to take a deep breath, but it stutters on the way out.
"Yes. I want to. Very much."
She licks her lips, catching the bottom one with her teeth before she speaks. "So, then why don't you?"
"Because," he murmurs. Because giving in to you could kill me, he thinks, though what comes off his tongue is a only half the truth. "Because doing what I want could have serious consequences for both of us."

She jumps when she hears a soft knock at the door. She smooths the silky slip dress she wears and fluffs her hair before running to the door, pulling it open with a smile that falters when she sees the man waiting for her on the other side.

*Mikki comes to invite Xavier out for lunch, but a bottle of lotion changes her plans*
Mikki starts to turn back around when something catches her eye at the corner of the sofa. She gets down on the floor and sees that it's the bottle of lotion she gave Xavier a while back. It's nearly empty already and there is a box of tissues shoved under the couch behind the tube. She holds the two items in her hands as ideas she definitely shouldn't be having swirl around in her mind.
Another muffled whimper catches Mikki's attention and she stands, deciding she'd better just check on Xavier to make sure he's not hurt or something. She knocks on the door and when she doesn't get an answer, she starts to worry.
"Xavier?"
Nothing.
Finally, she just decides to open the door and peer in. The sight she's greeted with is far from what she expected.

He doesn't move, doesn't look up. "I tried to leave," he says, his voice rough. "I got as far as the door."
"Why didn't you?" The question slips out before you can stop it.
His power ripples through the air between you, making your skin tingle with awareness. "You know why."
"Tell me anyway." You don't know why you're pushing, why you're testing the fragile restraint you can both feel cracking.
He finally looks up, and the raw need in his eyes steals your breath. "Because every time I walk away from you, it feels like dying. And I've done that enough for one lifetime, don't you think?"

The raw emotion in his voice makes your breath catch. You've seen glimpses of it before—in the way he watches you when he thinks you're not looking, in how his power always seems to curl around you protectively, in the careful distance he maintains even as he draws you closer.
"I'll be careful," you promise softly.
His eye flares, and for a moment, you think he might kiss you. Instead, he steps back, his usual smirk sliding back into place.
"Good. Because if you die, I'll have to find someone else to bend over my bike, and that would be terribly inconvenient."
