Summary
Gareth is the baby of the group, always has been, always will be. He's a year younger than Jeff and Frankie, and four years younger than Eddie. He was behind in everything, but it just was how it was.
He was a drummer and they needed one. The fact that he was the best drummer in a 100 mile radius helped.
But because of them hitting the ground running the moment he graduated, he didn't really get to have much of a regular young adult life.
He didn't really have much of a rockstar one either.

Summary
"Okay. We need a drummer."
This one lasted longer than all the others at least, but turned out he thought they were planning on playing at school only.
His parents would never let him play The Hideout.
"We've exhausted all options," Jeff sighed, leaning back in the beanbag chair in the corner of the garage. "Hawkins has three drummers and all of them have played for us."
"Are we the problem?" Frankie asked, resting his head against the wall.
"We can't be," Jeff replied, though he sounded unsure.
"I could be," Eddie sighed.

"Okay, but you're best friends. This is just a stupid argument that'll blow over," Steve said as he rubbed Eddie's back in bed. "He's just mad and you're just stubborn."
"But he's never yelled at me like that," Eddie whined.
"You've never yelled at him like that either, baby," Steve kissed the top of his head. "Just talk to him in the morning."
Easier said than done.

Summary
Eddie Munson was born to be a goddamn rockstar.
His mama told him before he could even hold a guitar: "You're gonna show this world what music is, string bean."
His Uncle Wayne told him when he was crying at her grave: "You're gonna sing for her, Ed."
Jeff's dad even looked at him in awe the first time he watched him play and said: "You've got what they look for, Eddie."

Summary
Gareth stared out the window of the bus, watching as trees passed in a blur as the sun sunk low in the sky. They'd been on the road for four hours and had roughly 81 days to go.
They'd all agreed no girlfriends or boyfriends on the first leg of the tour. This was just for them, for their hard work, for their passion.
Gareth had agreed. He hadn't really thought much about it. He figured they'd be so busy writing music, playing shows, and sleeping it all off, they wouldn't even have time to miss them. But after the initial celebration with drinks on the bus, they all went to their bunks, or in Gareth's case, the table by the long window.
He was lonely.

Summary
They joked for years about going all out for Gareth's 21st birthday, but he always brushed them off. He wasn't big into huge parties, would much rather just have some fun with the guys, drink, smoke, whatever.
His boyfriend, Sam, couldn't make it for his birthday, so he definitely didn't feel like celebrating much.
"C'mon! One stripper! I'm sure we could find a dude if that's what you want," Jeff nudged his shoulder as they settled on the bus after the show.
"Don't want a dude," Gareth sighed.
"A woman then! Even better for me and Frankie." Jeff poked his arm. "Sam won't mind. It doesn't mean anything."
"Not worried about Sam." He wasn't. He'd tell Sam all about it and Sam would laugh and ask if he tipped in ones or fives, he'd ask about their show, he'd tell him he loved him and missed him. "Just not interested."

Summary
Their label said it was too soon to do a reunion tour. They were only in their early 40s and had only been officially “broken up” for ten years.
But they were all in the right place: married, children who were old enough to come on tour but still young enough to be excited about it, and writing music that meant more to them than anything they’d done before.
Rumors had swirled for years after they announced their break up. None of them saw it as a breakup, more an early retirement that let them focus on building their lives. Fans and media alike hadn’t stopped coming up with other reasons for it: Gareth had been in love with Eddie for years and finally said something which caused friction, Jeff’s wife had threatened to divorce him if he didn’t take time off, Frankie had a drinking problem that was spreading like a viral disease.
None of it was even close to true.

Summary
Jeff's bribery worked and now they got paid $50 for every performance they did at The Hideout. $10 for each one of them to keep, $10 to put into a piggy bank for the band to use later. Eddie and Jeff wanted to save it for studio time to record a demo, Frankie wanted to save it for new equipment for all of them, and Gareth thought they should save it for a new van that would actually hold them all comfortably.
$10 once a week wasn't really gonna get them to those goals anytime soon.

Summary
Gareth hated to admit it, but he was jealous.
He was jealous of Steve still being able to hide under the radar enough that he could go to gay clubs and pride events without anyone batting an eye. He was jealous of Eddie being out publicly, not having to keep any part of his life a secret except for what he truly wanted to. And he was jealous of his own boyfriend, Sam, for not even having to worry about how the public would react if they knew he was gay.

Summary
Steve woke up to his phone ringing. He wouldn’t normally be too concerned about that happening, especially when it was barely eleven at night and Eddie was known to call when he got offstage for the night, but the ringtone wasn’t Eddie’s.
“Gareth?” Steve answered, heart already racing from the adrenaline of being woken up so quickly.
“Eddie fell!” Gareth’s voice was panicked as he spoke.

Summary
Gareth hates therapy.
Okay, hate might be a strong word.
He dislikes it strongly and wishes he could just write in a journal or something.
“Let’s talk about that some more,” the therapist, Jessica, smiled encouragingly.
“Talk about what?” He genuinely has no clue what she wants to hear more about.
“Your need for validation from your bandmates.”

“How are we still short?” Jeff mumbled under his breath.
Eddie heard him, though, and his heart sank in his chest.
“We don’t have enough.” It wasn’t a question.
Jeff shook his head.

“Gare’s gonna watch for a bit first, okay, sweet boy?” Eddie nipped at Steve’s hip as he stretched him open on four fingers.
“Mhm,” Steve whimpered, letting his head fall forward. He’d been on his hands and knees for a while, maybe an hour, maybe two. It was hard to say when Eddie’s tongue and fingers had been working him open for the entire time.
“You weren’t lying. He looks so good like this,” Gareth said, a lot closer than Steve expected him to be.

Summary
Jeff didn't really think much about finding love, his focus too honed in on becoming a rockstar for most of his childhood and young adulthood. He hooked up, sure, but it was rare, and never lasted more than one night.
Love was for later, after he had hit singles and Grammy awards and music videos.
But love doesn't wait, and it certainly doesn't come when you plan for it.
Amy came out of nowhere.

Jeff's tired of being the only one with a garage, and he's tired of hearing the neighbors complain, and he's tired of his parents making them rehearse at 3:30 in the afternoon.
It's the least metal time of day.
It's also the hottest time of day, and the fan blowing hot air at them may actually be more detrimental than if they didn't have anything at all.
