Summary
Xie Lian found him in the aftermath, once everything was said and done.
Or, well. He found it. A flickering scrap of a ghost flame. He had no right or reason to call it a ‘him’, but despite everything telling him otherwise, from his cultivation knowledge to his own personal experience with the brutal strength of those spirits to his freshly-dispersed luck, Xie Lian somehow knew -or couldn’t resist believing- that this ghost flame was Wuming.

Summary
A moment passed, and then Wuming groaned tellingly. Yeah, this guy should’ve passed out hours ago.
“I’m sorry, Your Highness,” he said softly, exhaustion slurring his words. “I’m still weak.”
Xie Lian hushed him. “Nevermind that. Rest, alright? We can talk more when you wake up.”
You’re only so weak because of me, anyway, he thought guiltily. This washed-out specter was a far cry from the ghost who effortlessly destroyed seal after seal within the walls of Yong’an’s Royal Palace.

Summary
“Oh,” he said, once his eyes focused and he realized Wuming was bent over the cooking pot in the middle of the room. His heart beat in double-time and his stomach flipped, although he couldn’t explain why. He was just suddenly deeply anxious, certain the idyllic picture before him was about to crack like a mirror.
But it didn’t. Wuming glanced towards the door and immediately lit up to see him.
“Your Highness! Welcome back.” He sounded so earnest that Xie Lian had to smile, casting aside his strange unease without another thought.

After months of vigilant care, Wuming has returned to Xie Lian!
So why wasn't he happy? Why now, of all times, was he falling apart?

Summary
There wasn’t a word for the expression on Wuming’s face. Nothing that could capture how wounded, lost, and painfully, painfully young he looked. So quietly devastated and confused that it reinforced two things for Xie Lian: that Wuming really did care, truly, deeply, ardently; and that no one had ever returned that care once in his life.
“I understand,” Wuming finally said. His voice was small, more like a child’s than a man’s. “I get it. I won’t say it anymore, so don’t... Don’t say that ever again. Please.”

Summary
“Thank you,” Wuming breathed. The words slid against Xie Lian's lips, the almost of a kiss that left tingles in its wake.
“Uh huh.” What were we talking about again? “It- it was nothing.”
Wuming retreated to a distance that didn’t tempt Xie Lian quite so much to dive back in. His lips were quirked faintly, his eye half-lidded. His gaze lingered on Xie Lian for a few moments before it dropped to the wad of fabric in his hand. Xie Lian took the chance to recompose himself.
“...It’s really nothing special,” he said.
“I love it.” Wuming’s voice brooked no quarter.

Summary
The temple had clearly been abandoned a while ago; aged and weathered, even its establishment plaque had fallen off at some point. There was absolutely nothing special about it.
And yet, looking at it, something in Xie Lian’s chest grew tight. That something compelled him to walk closer, closer, closer, climbing the steps to the temple proper even as his feet grew increasingly leaden. One of the temple doors was askew, and the other groaned weakly as he pushed it open.
Inside was nothing. Not a person, not a statue, not an offering. Just an altar, empty and alone.
And looking at that altar, something suddenly occurred to Xie Lian.
Oh. It’s been a year.
