Summary
Living life is a lot like playing dominos. Each new day is a new domino set up. And at any moment, any one of those dominos could fall, causing an unstoppable chain reaction until there were no more dominos to tip over. The end of the line. The end of a life.
For Perrine, their first domino fell exactly one year later.
Perrine is caught in a blizzard.

“Are you afraid?”
It spoke.
Its voice is neither male nor female. Deep and husky, yet gentle at the same time. But there’s also a subtle whisper beneath each word, like several others are speaking alongside it.
“I—” They choke, stammer, then force out, “Y-yes.”
Perrine meets the Croon for the first time.

Perrine has never been stung by any insect before- not a bee or a wasp or a hornet.

DID YOU KNOW?
Tarantula hawk wasps have one of the most painful stings in the world, rated second on the Schmidt sting pain index! The pain is described as, “Blinding, fierce, shockingly electric. A running hair dryer has just been dropped into your bubble bath.” It's beaten only by the bullet ant.--

“Hurts…” they murmur again.
“I know, honey, I know,” Amara says, but her voice sounds…weird. Different.
It’s a monumental effort, but Perrine opens their eyes and looks up.
That…isn’t Amara.
It’s their mother.
After getting bit by a snake, Perrine sees something strange...

Summary
“You’re burning up,” Clémentine says worriedly, their hands returning to hold Perrine’s face.
“‘m fine,” Perrine mumbles. They have their eyes closed, and they’re swaying on their feet. “Jus’ a little warm…”
“Warm?” Clémentine echoes, raising an eyebrow. “I could fry an egg on your forehead. I think you have heat exhaustion.”
“Nuh uh…” Perrine says, which may be the least eloquent thing Clémentine has ever heard come out of their mouth, and it would have been funny if it weren’t for the looming worry from their condition.
Heat exhaustion is no joke. If left untreated, it can easily turn into heat stroke, which could then threaten Perrine’s life.
Perrine gets heat exhaustion. Clémentine takes care of them.

Summary
There's no time to stop. No time to—
“PERRINE!”
A scream shatters their focus - Cole.
Perrine’s heart jolts. They turn sharply, eyes wide, scanning for what’s wrong, who’s hurt. But Cole isn’t looking at the game or at Kingsley or Clémentine. They’re staring at Perrine, pale-faced, eyes wide with horror.
“What?” Perrine asks, their voice tight. "What is it?"
Cole points, their mouth opening and closing as if trying to form words. Finally, they’re able to sputter out, “Y-Y-YOUR HAND!”
What?
Perrine looks down.
Oh.

Summary
Death is the natural end to the cycle of life. It will happen to all things, big and small.
Sometimes, though, that end comes too abruptly. Too unfairly. And it isn't right.
But there is also a balance. A scale that must always be equal.
Nothing is free. Not even a life.
--
“You, who weaves the past, and you,” they point a sharp, trembling talon at the Bellringer, “who rings the bell of the future. Together, you can fix this. Undo this.”
“Oh, my dear,” the Bellringer murmurs. “I wish we could, truly, but the dead are meant to stay—”
“They are not meant to stay!” the Croon cuts them off, their voice like the rumble of the earth about to crack open. “Perrine belongs to me. They were a part of me—connected. I felt them die. Do you know what that’s like? To feel that cord snap?”
“No,” says the Storyteller. “And we’re so terribly sorry that you had to feel that and that this had to happen, but…there is a cost. If we undo death, chaos will spread far beyond your control.”

“Kingsley,” Perrine says, their voice tight with concern. “Start paddling.”
“Huh?” They look up, blinking. “But I’m still eating!”
Ahead, the river seems to bend, its surface no longer smooth but churning, frothing white in places. The channel is more like a gaping maw, studded by fangs of jagged rock ready to snap shut around them. The sound grows louder, a distant roar that vibrates through their ribs.
“Kingsley, start paddling now!”
They must have seen the fear in Perrine’s eyes, or perhaps the reflection of the oncoming whitecaps, because they drop their sandwich to the bottom of the canoe and whip around. “P-Perrine…”
“Paddle, NOW!”
Perrine and Kingsley go canoeing.

Summary
Perrine is the least favorite of the Lark.
That isn’t to say that they’re disliked or hated or anything, quite the contrary. They’ve never heard of anyone talking that poorly about them, and they’ve always been praised. It’s not that they aren’t liked, it’s just that people love the other three more.

Summary
Before the front door even opens, Perrine knows that Amara has come for a visit. They know this because she has a very distinct voice, and they can hear her squawking from outside, greeting the other three, who were playing a game. They can barely suppress a groan.
And then the front door does open, and they do groan.
Perrine and Amara didn't start out close.

Summary
Living out in the woods, Perrine has come into contact with all sorts of animals. And because of this, they know very well how dangerous animals can be. Even timid deer can become aggressive, especially during rutting season, when those beautiful antlers are more like a crown of daggers that can cleave into the skin just as easily as puma claws.
But it isn’t the pumas that are the most dangerous. It isn’t the wolves. It isn’t even the bears.
It’s the moose.
Obviously.
But in very close second are boars.
After getting attacked in the woods, Perrine finds aid from two unlikely allies.
They're also pretty sure they interrupted a date.

Summary
“Nothing,” they say, voice too flat. Too quiet.
Cole knows better. They nudge closer, their shoulder bumping Perrine’s, a gentle reminder that they’re here. “Perrine.” The name, soft but firm, cuts through the stillness. “I know you’re lying.”
Perrine’s lips twitch, but it’s not quite a smile. More like the ghost of one. “Do you now?”
Cole nods, determined. “I do. So spill it.”
Perrine’s mask falters, just for a second, a crack in the facade that reveals the storm brewing underneath. They draw in a shuddering breath, then let it out, their shoulders slumping as if the weight of the world is resting there.
“It’s stupid,” Perrine mutters, but there’s a tremor in their voice now, a quiver that makes Cole’s heart clench. “I just—” They swallow, their gaze flicking back to the window, to the darkness beyond, and it’s almost like they want to run out into the shadows and never come back to the light. “I miss my mom.”
While up late, Perrine shares something with Cole.
