Jason froze at the sudden sound of crying.
He set the drink tray on the table, taking a seat, but no one noticed—everyone was staring at the newcomer. He frowned, turned his gaze to the door, and his eyes shot open faster than someone who’d just had an adrenaline boost.
It was a blonde woman, no older than 30, stumbling into the cafe while clearly intoxicated. She reeked of alcohol, her hair was messy, and every step she took looked like it would be her last. Jason felt his entire body go rigid—she looked so much like Beryl—but then he noticed the little boy behind her. He was blond, likely her son, and sobbing. There were tears streaming down his face, snot dripping from his nose, and he was beet red.
The woman yanked him forward, bending down to get in the kids face. “I said shut it. We’re in public.”

The rod struck, and a shriek tore out of his throat before he could stop it. Some people winced, some people looked away, there was a younger kid crying somewhere in the background.
Jason’s body shook in the chains, every nerve raw and flayed, every inch of him exposed in ways he never thought possible.
Cameron twirled the iron rod in hand (and Jason wanted to scream that he wasn’t a cheerleader and he needed to stop doing that—), before looking Jason up and down with a small hum. “God, if only you could see yourself…”
Hard pass. He’d probably end up puking like the other campers.

Someone touched something on his side and gods, it hurt. He let out a whimper, trying to curl in on himself. This was too much—everything was too much. He could still smell the acrid stench of sweat and blood, feel the dirt and grime covering every inch of his body, could hear their breathing, talking, shifting. Everything felt like a knife in his ears, stabbing and grating. He wanted it to stop. He wanted everything to stop.
He felt something, a hand on his. Real. Firm. Warm. He let out a choked noise, wounded and raw.
“Jason?”

He remembered the feeling of disintegrating, dissipating—whatever you wanted to call it. He was there, held in excruciating pain he couldn’t even process, then he wasn’t.
He just… wasn’t.
It’s hard to explain how it felt. Like he was everything and nothing at the same time, there but not there, conscious but asleep. He was stuck in an infinite domain, an endless void. He was aware of every square inch in New York city but he didn’t even know his own name.
He wasn’t Donnie, he just… was. That’s all he could say. He was a numb being that saw everything without seeing. It felt like fire and ice, distant but sharp.
It was terrifying. It was everything. It was nothing.

Jason went to protest but Percy was already up, grabbing Jason’s wrist to haul him out the door.
His bad wrist.
He yelped, ripping his arm out of Percy’s hold in seconds. He was already cradling his arm when he realized what he’d done, his face paling to the colour of paper within seconds.
Percy just stared at him. Confused, worried. His eyes drifted from Jason’s face down to his wrist, then back up again. He pursed his lips, clearly debating whether or not he should ask or leave it alone.
“You okay?” He ventured slowly, and Jason could see the gears turning in his head, the dots starting to connect.

“I don’t care.” His voice was cold. The lightning was stronger still, crackling and filling the air with ozone. It had covered his upper body completely and was spreading fast. “You’re putting your faith in an entirely half empty glass—I don’t care about you anymore.”
Athena was watching him carefully, the other gods sharing looks that Jason couldn’t quite decipher. Except for Hermes, that is. He looked highly amused.
“I will no longer do your bidding. I will no longer be your puppet. If you have such a problem with that, then kill me.” He took a step forward, eyes glowing bright blue. The lightning spanned his entire body now. “You had no qualms with letting me die before.”

The speaker crackled and then the voice was gone, replaced with a robotic countdown. Two swords were dropped from above (again, where were these things coming from—) and Jason jogged over to grab his from where it had fallen in the sand.
Fifty six seconds left. Fifty six seconds to come up with a game plan to kill another human being.
Gods, how did this happen? He didn’t want to fight; he didn’t even want to be here, but he clearly didn’t have a choice. He couldn’t afford to play the peace card. He needed to survive to get out, and if he wanted to survive…
He tightened his mouth into a thin line. He had no choice but to kill Noah.

He opened his mouth but Jason held up a hand, silencing him before he could say anything. “I could help you get stronger. We could help each other. Don’t you see? We’re children of the big three, we were never meant to be weak. We were never meant to hold ourselves back for the very people we were designed to oppose.”
Percy scoffed, narrowing his eyes. He was scanning Jason like he was calculating exactly how to take him down at any given moment. It sent a pleasant thrill through his stomach, almost like butterflies—but sharper, tingling and hot.
“What if I don’t want to get stronger? What if I’m perfectly content where I am right now?”
“But you’re not.” He said simply. His lips curled up into a smirk. “Come on, don’t you want to test your limits, see how far you could go? Don’t you want to push yourself until you figure out how to control anyone just by manipulating their blood? The water in their body?”
He stepped forward. Percy stood his ground. “I do. I want to see how far you can go. How far I can go.”
