Summary
The Imperium is being built. The archaeologists have begun.
Magos Hestia Var has been assigned to the low-value cultural residue layer - our era, our near-future - categorised by her superiors as background noise to be cleared ahead of more important work. She is precise, methodical, and increasingly unable to move past what she finds. Her official dispatches conform to Mechanicum doctrine. Her personal addenda are where she actually lives.
She is, without knowing it, the only person in the nascent Imperium genuinely trying to understand what humanity was.
This is not a story about the Emperor, or the primarchs, or the wars that made the world she walks through. It is a story about a pub sign that outlasted a dynasty. A weather station that kept measuring the sky after everyone who built it was dead. A pixelated snake still eating dots after thirty thousand years. Three enormous stones on a plateau that successive civilisations built around rather than through, without coordinating it, across three millennia, for reasons none of them retained.
The mundane outlasts the monumental. The domestic outlasts the imperial. The everyday outlasts ideology.
Hestia Var files the addenda anyway.Series
