Summary
Spike didn’t die when he fought the Syndicate. Someone saved him, pulled him back into the land of the living against his will. He woke up, bound and cold in some sort of lab, no idea where he was or what these people wanted from him. All he knew was one thing, they’d take their dues for saving his life. More than that, he wasn’t alone. It seemed he wasn’t the first person they’d done this to.
Spike hadn’t died when he fought the Syndicate. Maybe it would have been better if he had.

The second term has begun. Markus' biology course is over, and Connor has gotten a lot better at drawing people. They keep up the tutoring between Art Major and Science Major anyway, because what better (and more or less subtle) excuse is there to enjoy each other's exclusive company without having to own up to complicated feelings? Unfortunately for Connor, one cannot run from their gay thoughts forever... And that's pretty bad when you've been violently repressing them your whole life.
"Masseter.” He pointed at Markus’ mouth. “Buccinator, and orbicularis or-"
Connor faltered.
“What?” said Markus. Then, he grinned and teased: “No way. Did you actually forget what it’s called?”
“Of course not.” Connor shook his head and quickly got back on track. “Orbicularis oris.”
He felt the moment Markus tensed up when, presumably, he himself realized that they were sitting quite close to each other, that Connor had his hands on the sides of Markus’ face, that his thumb was very close to the corner of his mouth, and most damning of all, that Connor had hesitated just a second before.

Leo nodded his head without taking his eyes off the tempting jug of cold salvation in Kaiman's hand.
"And yet you still choose to refrain from taking a life?" he next asked.

Leo nodded his head again.
After that, Kaiman gave him a devious grin and had the nerve to tip the jug up to his own mouth to take a big swig right in front of him, before setting it down on the floor directly outside the glass wall between them.
“You would have earned your water today if you had obeyed my command. Let this be a lesson for you.”
