Summary
It was easy to see dragons in the Luxour -- easy, also, to see the ruined grandeur of ancient palaces, a stray shift of moonlight and shadow become a pennant streaming from a jagged parapet, a tumble of stones suggesting the arc of a fallen bridge, the glitter of mica turned to a kingdom's ransom in jewels strewn carelessly on the sand. The desert breathed magic, pulsed with power like the beat of some unimaginably vast heart.
Rad loved it all, loved the heat and the dark and the way the Luxour swallowed him whole, swam in his veins and spun in his mind until the rest of the world seemed a mere fancy, thin shreds of green and damp helpless to stand before the weight of sun and stone. When his family listened to his dreams with polite confusion, when the angles and company of Draken's court began to chafe, when a new curl of magic refused to untangle and let him examine and recreate its threads, he lost himself in the desert until, through that loss, he was found.
"That's very poetic," Brand Saphier said when Rad tried to explain, "but while becoming one with the Luxour may be useful for philosophical pursuits, I don't think it's a practical method of finding a path to Ro Holding."
