If asked what he would change about everything since summer, Ozaki isn’t sure what he’d say. Kill the Kirishikis as soon as they came to town, sure, but was that even possible? Simply stake all the dead before they could rise, perhaps. But it’s all logistical semantics. At this point, things were probably already too late.

After a long year of tribulations, Toshio's finally found his fire again, and he'll be damned if he lets Seishin leave him alone again this time.

Run run run and don't ever let me catch you Seishin, thinks Toshio, for then I will have to end this chase and kill you. And I care for you far too much to ever do that.

A year after Sotoba and every sickening deed within it burns to the ground finds Toshio in deep misery. Though he tries his hardest, he doesn't have the leads or resources to find Seishin and Sunako. Things turn around for Toshio when he gets attacked by a Shiki that he doesn't recognize from the village people. He realizes that whoever must have sired Sunako must have had other sires or had not been alone in their condition. Purpose reignited, he decides to become a Shiki hunter, leaving the one who'd attacked him alive to follow them to other Shiki. It's this way that he tracks down Seishin again.(A short AU where Toshio finds Seishin and Sunako again, can be read as platonic or romantic Toshio/Seishin.)

The look on Seishin's face is wide-eyed, shocked. A strange thing to see on his normally neutral visage."...Toshio." he says, as if the wind has been knocked out of him.
Toshio takes out a pack of cigarettes from his pocket and lights one on the nearby flame covering a wall, "Yeah, did you miss me?" The man puts the cigarette in his mouth and inhales, "I think we've both been up to things since the last time we properly saw each other."
Toshio is doused in blood, just like the night they went their separate ways. Seishin grits his teeth, knowing what the other man is here for.

In the fall of 1994, a small Japanese village called Sotoba, comprising of roughly 1,300 people, burned to the ground, leaving only a handful of survivors. Among those survivors were people who told stories of the dead rising and trying to take the village over, resulting in an affair that could only be described as gruesome. Tales passed of an epidemic that started during this peculiarly hot summer that unfurled into terrifying depictions of loss and horror. This account is one of those stories.
An alternate retelling of the last few episodes of Shiki, incorporating a tragic romance between Kaori Tanaka and Megumi Shimizu into the center of it, featuring an altered cast of survivors and desperate bid for survival that conflicts with the intense passion and feeling behind the love Kaori and Megumi feel for each other..
