Oh, so she's freeing and imprisoning people already. What a perfect leader, Jet thinks, leaning against the cavern wall, her arms crossed as she stares down the sorceress thunderously. And I was just starting to enjoy the idea of ruling Candia, too.
Not for the first time today, she is more than a little bit pissed that she's no longer alive to say these things out loud.

It is becoming easier, almost, to adjust to the new way of life. He has switched to using his left hand to cast the spell, and the effects are creeping further and further up his left arm with each passing day, even if they vanish by the next morning.
But that is an understandable price to pay. A reasonable price, if it keeps everyone else safe. It doesn’t matter, really, if he has started to find more and more lacerations from stray waves of shadow each morning as he lies in his untouched bed. It doesn’t matter that the pupils of his eyes, when he gazes into the reflective glass of the captain’s desk, are starting to disappear entirely. Nor that he will sometimes start at the faint feeling of fingers threading around his neck, tracing the line of his cheek.
“Praesidio. Praesidio, fortier defendebant, defendebant splendide...”
The Rocks family is safe. Any price is worth that.

Summary
There's a whole tidal wave of emotions threatening to pull Saccharina out to sea to drown. She swallows them all down, forces a shaky smile onto her face. "It's nice to meet you as well," she says politely. "I would say I've heard much about you, but I fear that might be an exaggeration."
"Ruby doesn't talk about me much, I would imagine," Jet nods sagely. "Has she at least told you about my ideas? You gotta ask her about my ideas, I had so many of them!"
Saccharina thinks about the last time she had tried to ask Ruby about something Jet related, and the anger that had flashed across Ruby's face. Nowadays, Ruby is better at swallowing that anger down and being kind instead, but she's not nearly as good as hiding it as she might think she is and Saccharina knows, she knows their relationship is nowhere near the levels she once dreamed it to be. "I will try," she says quietly. "Your twin is very hard to approach sometimes."

Summary
It's been about a year since the reclamation Castle Candy. Since then, Amethar and Caramelinda have been instated as Emperor and Empress, Saccharina is the Queen of Candia, and all of Calorum is kind of a mess. But the leaders are coming together to sign a new and improved Concord, a good step in the direction of fixing all the messes made at the Grand Tournament.
Until an attack in Comida leaves Saccharina on the ground and Ruby unresponsive, and they all realize Ruby pushed Saccharina out of the way. Why would she do that?

Absently, Ruby is aware of Saccharina moving almost cautiously towards her—the way one might approach a wild animal. Ruby doesn’t even have it in her to send all of her anger and hate Saccharina’s way right now. She doesn’t know how to even begin to explain what she is feeling in this moment, other than the fact that she is dealing with an absence so loud that she doesn’t think she can even speak. Saccharina must intuit this, somehow.
(In the small part of her brain that isn’t overwhelmed by loss, Ruby considers that Saccharina, a girl that grew up alone, without a castle or her family, might actually know a thing or two about loss).

Two years ago I was clicking around in the mermay collection, which has a tab to see all the fandoms that are in it, and had the passing thought, "hey it'd be funny to try and get a mermay fic for every letter of the alphabet" and then, since I was also writing fic for the 911 fandom that year, I went "well, it has to be alphanumeric now" and thus spawned one of the most absurd silly little challenges I have ever set myself. This series is the result.
