It's been seven years since Smoke left. A departure he never wanted to take as Annie was a love he never wanted to leave but grief and fear put him in a place he never thought he would be. Promises to return sooner than later and weekly letters and phone calls from community phone lines started consistently and after a year became nearly nonexistent. Now he's back. As irrational as it is for someone whose life (and the way he moves through it) has been dictated by logic, he believes what he and Annie have is eternal and fated so he's sure they will find their way back to love that sustained them and the home they created in each other. Then, he hears whispers of her moving on with someone new in the last year. Even if it's wrong, selfish, and unfair to what she is attempting to create...he'll show her that he loves her STILL.

He ignored the way his brother's eyes were staring holes into the side of his face. Reaching out without looking he flicked Stack on the forehead. Once upon a time his brother would have hissed in pain. He was sure Stack hardly felt it now, but he had been struck with muscle memory. Stack blinked back his shock, grinning bright and stupid. A warmth settling in his chest. His brother hardly ever touched him now. Stack didn't know if it was out of fear or disgust maybe both even.
"Quit starin' at me." Smoke huffed.
"Let me find out you making a friend Smoke."
"I ain't makin' no god damn friends."
"Yeah whatever. Louis kinda draw you in huh? No weird shit....just...." Stack fumbled, realizing how that was sounding.
Smoke ignored his fumbling. He understood what he meant. For someone so weighed down....he had a way of being a lighthouse in a storm. Like beckoning ships at sea closer. Or rather pulling out the dying embers and giving fresh air. Thats what he was....fresh air. Something new.....a change of pace.
"Yeah..." Was all Smoke offered back.

Smoke only ever came into ‘Luela’s Dressings’ to collect for the month. So he had been reluctant to ask if she could mend his shirt. Sweetea hadn’t batted an eye at the request—or the shakiness in his hands as he struggled to unbutton it—but she had taken over the task for him.
“Whoever tailored this made these bartacks too tight.” Had been her tactful explanation. “You’d do better with a keyhole stitch.”
She’d carefully loosened them on every jacket and shirt he brought to her ever since, making them easier for him to handle. That was all it really took to loosen him up; to relax the button to his britches the same way—work them down past his hips. Smoke swore things had just gone too far. That a tryst like that wouldn’t happen again. He wasn’t going to come back.
He’s a married man.
But just like he had every other week, he came back to collect—looking for something sweet.
