Summary
In this alternate version of the story, Steele falls off the cliff and is knocked unconscious on the rocks below. When he awakens, he has lost all memory of who he is, leaving him disoriented. Meanwhile, Balto, holding the box of antitoxin in the gorge, howls and climbs the cliff with the medicine. After the sled dogs appoint him as the lead of the team, Balto surprises everyone by passing the responsibility to Star. Having accepted his wolf heritage, he chooses to follow his own path rather than force himself into a place where he isn’t fully welcome. Though unsure of himself, Star accepts the role and steps up to guide the team. Determined to rescue Steele, Balto returns to the gorge, where he finds Steele struggling and realizes the other dog has lost his memory. Balto tries to guide him home, but the harsh weather forces them to seek shelter in an abandoned bear cave. With his memory gone, Steele behaves completely differently, well, almost differently. He's no longer cruel or jealous, but still hostile, allowing a new dynamic to develop between him and Balto. (Balto X Steele)
