“So… you’ll show me around the bar too? We’ll be colleagues?”
Will remains suspended for a heartbeat, his eyes wide with a fleeting, stunned clarity. Then, a sheepish, airy laugh breaks through his surprise.
“Oh! No, Mike. I’m not behind the bar.”
A subtle tilt of his head draws Mike’s eye toward the stage. Will catches his bottom lip between his teeth, a nervous habit that betrays the sudden spike in the room’s electricity.
“I’m a dancer here.”

Summary
Mike was sick of them. Sick of their double dates, their couple's costumes, inside jokes and plans they just have to make a 'couples thing'. Sure, the six of them still hung out together all the time, but Mike and Will would always end up ostracized by default, unable to communicate with them now that they only spoke the language of love and nothing else. And that summer, at the cottage, it definitely wouldn't be any different.

The party goes over to Lucas's family cottage for the summer; Mike and Will get bothered by how often they're excluded from all the couples stuff their friends do, which leads them to start pretending to be dating in the most insufferable way they can come up with. "Now, I know you’ll resist," Mike blurts out, stepping toward him. "But I think this will be good. For both of us! For when we... you know,” Mike trails off, “When we get partners.”
Will scoffs, stepping closer to inspect the titles.

Or: Mike suggests a spicy card game to help Will loosen up before college. It works a little too well, and suddenly they’re gambling with unresolved feelings, and clothes, that were meant to stay in place.

“What!” It was Will’s turn to blush harder, giving him a glare reserved for Mike Wheeler and Mike Wheeler only. “No. God. That was ages ago. I’ve been past that for a long time.”
Mike motioned like he’d made his point. “See? So? It wouldn’t be weird.”
So, Mike likes guys. Fine, Will can live with that.
