They were Conrad pulling her back for one more kiss when literally every adult in the building had already told them to stop. They were late bells, detention threats, Steven gagging at lunch, Jeremiah laughing until he cried, and teachers saying their names with the exhausted disappointment of people who had simply seen too much.
Five times the teachers separated Conrad and Belly.

When she was younger they’d been fanciful - locked in a room with no one able to find the key, handcuffed in the back of a car, stranded on a desert island. Later, after she grew up and they dated they crystallised into more realistic scenarios- stuck in loops of traffic, delayed in a train station, sat on the tarmac. Taylor laughed at her once, telling her how funny it was to daydream about spending time with someone she was actively dating, but she couldn’t help it. She was always looking to get him alone.

It made sense that he could barely talk, barely think, barely shift the half-awe, half-panic caught somewhere in his chest as he watched her trace the metal numbers on his front door with her finger.
But this—this was the fourth time Belly had visited him here. And Conrad was starting to wonder if he was ever going to start being fucking normal about it.

It took until the sixth or seventh time Belly said it, murmured between kisses and sighed against his heart, that Conrad could even hear the words without feeling like the wind had just been knocked out of him.
