Summary
This wasn’t the first time she had seen her mother’s portrait in her father’s office.
It wasn’t the 10th, 50th, or even 100th. Every time she came in to ask for permission that would be denied or to get reprimanded for some minuscule slight, it was always overseen by her mother’s smile; false and comforting at the same time. She usually gave it a cursory glance before the pain outweighed the nostalgia and she had to look away. She didn’t see how Father could stand having it looking over his shoulder all day.
Usually, she wouldn’t be thinking about it at-she checked the clock-2:35am, especially with school only a few hours away.
But today, now, was her mother’s birthday.

"You should teach me to read those before we get to Erid, so I can be polite." As Grace considered the linework, already picking up on some vague ideas from the shapes in Rocky's carapace, something else occurred to him. "So… I picked 'Rocky' because your outer shell looks like stone."
"And for inspirational story of athlete who defeats human system of poverty to become great champion. Eye of the tiger."
"Retroactively, yeah." Grace bent at the hips, getting to Rocky's 'eye' level. "So what'd you name me?"

Summary
I lived with this hunger long before the Hail Mary. This is nothing new. I’m fine.
Right up until Rocky asks another question.
“When last time you touch other human person skin, question?”
Oh. Oh no. “When I… a few days after I first woke up here.”
Rocky starts to relax for a split second, but then tightens when something occurs to him.
“Grace crewmates dead when you wake up. You said this, statement. You not even know your own name, remember nothing, see dead bodies, confirm?”
I nod, because if I open my mouth I will gag.
“When last time Grace touch ALIVE human person, question.”
I swallow thickly. I don’t answer aloud because I know Rocky can hear the hitch in my breath. My stomach churns with fresh bile. He senses my vital signs tick over into stress patterns and goes very, very still again.
“Grace. When last time, question.”
I clench my jaw so hard my temples ache, and beg him with my eyes to just stop.
“Grace. Please say not when… when Evil Stratt humans put you to sleep.”
I can taste grass.
