It will never makes sense until it does. That’s all the books say, in a variety of ways, about soulmarks. And really, the amount of worth one puts in them is entirely up to the individual. Some will live their life dedicated to finding who has the complementary mark. Others hide theirs and a few will mar the skin so much that there is no telling what was once there.
Really, though, it varied from person to person.
