The flames that destroy the grasses are not like the controlled flames of autumn that yearly renew the land, but these are poisonous flames that lick the land with the venom of death. Insatiable they annihilate the very life of the soil, gluttonously devouring everything that lives upon it and under it, the the sleeping cicadas, the brittle switchgrass, the slumbering milkweed, dock and fennel, deer and dormice, yea, even the worms that nourish the earth; and you know with the knowledge of death that it will be barren forever.

When Change itself awoke, and found that it was amidst an unfaltering, absolute darkness- a gaping chasm of nothingness that swallowed all around the senses- it did not at first perceive Eru, for He was in awe of His creation. And as Change throbbed and bleakly realized His own life, coming to first consciousness, it saw first only the darkness that was Chaos and perceived that it was akin, and called it the Void-Mother.
