    Summary

Following the death of her parents, Margaret Hale is grieving and lonely in London. John Thornton is in Milton, struggling to keep the mill afloat, and is just as unhappy and lonely. Could an overheard conversation and a series of letters lead them to the joyful life they deserve?

This is an alternative version of Margaret and John's journey from estrangement to understanding.

Margaret buys an estate outside of Milton-gardens of roses, flowers, fruit trees, and bumble bees.
John is most attentive and Margaret is thoroughly courted!

    Summary

This is a story which takes place before and during the novel North & South by Elizabeth Gaskell. Its protagonist, a young baker/kitchenmaid named Delphine, works for the Thorntons and the story centers around her relationships with the family, especially John Thornton, and others in the city of Milton. For those who wish to see John Thornton as pure and innocent before he marries Margaret, then this story is not for you.

Delphine has escaped her sordid past in France and is trying to start fresh in Milton. She is a talented baker and uses these skills to connect with those around her. When an unlikely friendship blooms between her and Mr. Thornton, she has to navigate through her past, through society, and her hopes for the future in order to not lose everything she's risked so much to achieve.

The story is based on the novel but I have taken aspects from the 2004 BBC production as well.

It is a complete novel length work but was posted in chapter groups. Thank you for reading. Enjoy!

    Bookmarker's Notes

Delightfully written. Very well edited and proofread. English intermixed with appropriate French words and phrases. Delicious sounding recipes: baking, ice cream, puddings…

I at first thought the author Canadian, as apart from being bilingual in ENG/FR that’s how the spelling is (‘our’ words + ‘zes/zed/zation’), until chapter 5 when she(?) wrote ‘fantacised’ with an ‘s’ in the British English way, so needed to read ensuing chapters to be certain.
