Summary
But then, the transporter grated again into motion, a terrible whine leaving it as a beam of light slowly consolidated into a heartrendingly familiar form. Kirk stared, half agony and half hope, hardly daring to imagine it was possible. The beam wavered, then settled, and there he suddenly was — somewhat ruffled, yes, but upright and breathing.
The most beautiful creature that Kirk could imagine — Spock, alive! — stood at attention on the transporter pad, and, overcome, Kirk could do nothing else but take him by the arms and kiss him. It was sheer animal instinct, urging him to grasp what once was thought lost and draw it close.

When a transporter malfunction leads Kirk to believe that Spock has died, he has an entirely proportionate response to the revelation that he hasn't. Spock, fortunately, has no objections.

Determined to still find wonderment in a desperate and bleak world he joins a circus only to discover it is on it last legs and being run into the ground. Loosing hope and finally coming to terms there is nothing amazing left in the world, he meets a side show performer with pointy ears that takes his breath away.

Then Spock reappears on Earth. Everything improves... but oddly, some people in Starfleet Command take exception to Spock's changes. Hopefully talks with the Klingons go well – Spock has been very helpful.
