    Summary

It’d been the last time they were all together, a moment of peace before their guests arrived at the manor. Aline, at her piano. Clea, at her harp. Verso played the guitar with the same heartbreaking earnestness he brought to every instrument. Renoir took up his accordion.

Their son held the violin out to his sister, winking. “Your choice. I wrote a vocal accompaniment if you’d prefer that.”

Her voice carried through the hall beautifully, a perfect complement to the instrumental composition. When the song ended, Aline nearly begged them to begin again. They could live in this moment a little longer. They could stay here.

    But songs ended.

    Summary

Verso moved his hand out of hers and towards her stomach. Clea let him, curious, and watched as his hand settled on her suspenders. His thumb moved over the metal clasps, leaving a dull smear of blood in its wake.

Horror, sharp and ice cold, poured down her throat and spread through her spine. She had missed that spot. How did she miss something?

Verso moved his bloodstained thumb to his face and sniffed theatrically. "Blood," he murmured. "You've gotten sloppy."

The cold horror flared and turned hot. Clea glared.

Brat. She was going to finish what the fire started.

"I don't get sloppy," she hissed. She grabbed his hand and yanked it toward her again. It must've hurt, must've stretched at his scars, but he let her do it without protest.

Post-fire, Clea and Verso try to take care of each other.

“Well,” Lucy said, caught up enough in the idea to feel a little reckless with it. “Why not? Isn’t it better to do something true because we want to, rather than something that looks right so no one will wonder? These are our lives.”

Edmund and Lucy and looking for god in all the right-and-wrong-and-right-again places.

“A Miracle,” the top headline of the New York Evening Post proclaimed in large, bold font. Below the glowing prose sending boundless thanks to the French army surgeons and merciful God for having preserved America’s most treasured ornament, Eliza Hamilton noted another headline in smaller text: “Vice President Burr Flees Southward Ahead of Possible Indictment.”

Alexander Hamilton barely survives the duel with Vice President Aaron Burr. History will never be the same.
