Two days after their first contact—and more importantly, their first words—Grace sets up his thinking machine to speak.
Rocky does not need the assistance of a machine for Grace’s language. It is ugly and harsh to listen to, but it’s relatively simple to learn. That, and, well—Rocky was alone for a very, very long time before he met Grace. He maybe hangs on to each word a little more than strictly necessary. Grace only needs to tell him each word once for Rocky to know it forever.

Rocky took ‘Grace’ – a word in a language he can’t speak, with a meaning that doesn’t directly translate – and gave his human friend a name, one with weight and significance, which conveyed exactly who Grace was to the people of Erid. Then, to keep things professional, he did it a second time.
Grace isn’t even mad about it any more. He just wishes he hadn’t waited so long to return the favour.
(Set after 'False Friends'. Can stand alone. Context: Grace has landed on Erid and recovered from most of his hang-ups around that. Oh, and the malnutrition.)

Rocky visits Grace's life support quarters with some exciting news, some time into his recovery on Erid---the biodome habitat has finally been completed.
It takes a step through the airlock and sinks down into rough sand and pebbles. I chirp and hop down after it. Grace has not seen the biodome yet, but neither have I, and in my enthusiasm I dart slightly ahead.
Grace inhales so sharply that I turn to hear him better in a panic. “Grace? Grace, what is wrong? You are hurt?”
My assumption is quickly corrected when, without warning, it bolts.

The first thing he comes to is his “newspaper”. It’s a post with a big square, the size of a wall poster, and it houses all the community news so he can stay up to date. It’s written in raised lettering, in English, because there’s a person in charge of this, this unnecessary but so treasured aspect of his life, that learned to read and write a whole language, just for him. That translates the local news so he can read it and feel like he’s part of everything. They put a seat in front of it, so he could read comfortably on days that the gravity is a little too much for him, but today he feels fine. So he stands in front and catches up on this clusters’ mating and hatching announcements (he likes to make and send silly little cards for these, that apparently are a huge hit, so he jots the names down, copying the accompanying written Eridianese in the little notebook he keeps on him).
