Simon's been on Erid, physically, for 2 months.

He doesn't trust Grace or Rocky by any stretch of the word, not even sure he's convinced those are their real names.
And yet, seeing the usually cheerful, compassionate, and unnervingly trusting scientist so afraid had felt like a cold dead weight in his stomach.

Some overzealous Eridians(its quite literally a cult) decide to take matters into their own hands regarding their saving grace. All while Simon is still recovering from the blood ocean.

Summary
The "Dr" in Dr Ryland Grace is an academic title, not a medical one. He can handle microorganisms just fine. Human bodies in need of first aid, less so. Human-ish bodies bearing radiation-induced piscine mutations never before seen to science, bleeding out and missing limbs and carrying so, SO many infections? Firmly out of his wheelhouse.
But oh, when he finds a submarine(?) floating in space(??), carrying a disoriented, mutated, half-dead man allegedly from another dimension(???), he cannot shut off the Science Brain. His list of questions is a mile long.
Maybe he'll even get some answers once this man is no longer actively dying. Correction: IF he can get this man past the point of actively dying.
(I fell down a research rabbit hole about the absolutely HORRENDOUS ways that even the most basic medical care can go wrong in space. I then decided it would be fun to add ✨mystery mutations✨ and ✨Simon's trauma smorgasbord✨ to the mix)

Summary
Grace's webbed hands press against the glass, his curious chitters surprising the young man standing next to the viewport he was observing from. He’s newer on the team, Grace jogs his memory for his name again.
The young man holds his hand to his chest, breathing a sigh of relief, “Oh hey, Grace. Come to see your new neighbor?”
He nods, chirping his burning question, “Who is it?”
“Dunno,” Chris, right, that’s his name– “It’s another mer.”
(Or, Rocky and Adrian are helped by a merman named Grace, and in turn they save him. Now happily living in the Erid Marine Rehabilitation & Research Center, Grace is surprised when another injured merman named Simon is brought to recover in a neighboring tank. Perhaps, these two lost souls may finally have a home, together.)

Summary
Simon has never been good with kids. When a child appears out of thin air in his submarine and the COI still refuses to pull him up, all Simon can do is protect her from the horrors of the ocean. Even if he knows there's not much hope for either of them to live.
Ryland Grace is living his best life on Erid. He has a wonderful best friend, scientific colleagues who respect him, and students who adore him. Unless he decides to make the journey back to Earth, however, he doesn't expect to see another human any time soon. He certainly wasn't expecting to stumble upon a traumatized father and daughter welded into a blood-filled submarine.

Summary
After ramming the sub straight into the Light, Simon wakes up on a strange spaceship with no memory of how he got there. The state of the Hail Mary -spacious, clean, bright and comfortable- can only lead to one conclusion: Simon has somehow been picked up by one of the highest-ranking leaders of the C.O.I.
Luckily, Dr. Grace doesn't seem to recognize him, buying Simon enough time to hatch yet another desperate plan for survival before his identity is discovered. In the meantime, Simon tries his best to stay in the man's good graces (no pun intended), but he's hardly known for his charming personality.
Both of them are in for a bumpy ride.

Considering he hasn’t seen another human in about a decade, and this human is both distractingly handsome and incredibly traumatized, it’s safe to say that this might be a challenge… especially with Ryland still working through his own issues, even all these years later.
But he saved the entire world, so, how hard could it be to save one more man?
