The funny part was that Lambert almost didn’t even go back to Kaer Morhen that winter. Maybe it wouldn’t have made a difference in the long run. Maybe the four of them—him and Eskel and Geralt and that damn little songbird—were Destiny with a capital D (heh), and would have ended up in the same place eventually no matter what.
Or maybe Destiny was for chumps.
Lambert made the choice to go home. He made the choice to bring Geralt’s bard with him. And everything that came after that was a choice, too, even the love.
Maybe especially the love.
Ok, so funny wasn’t the right word. Whatever. Lambert wasn’t a big words guy.
It was just that when he rode into sight of the base of The Killer that year and his stomach curdled with something a little bit like homesickness and a lotta bit like dread, and instead of turning around he chose to go to the village that squatted at its base and stock up for the climb—
Well, that turned out to be an incredibly meaningful fucking choice. That’s all he was saying.

Summary
Jaskier had climbed the trail up to the keep before with Geralt and it had definitely taken a lot less time. (The Witchers themselves called it ‘the killer’, and they had the nerve to call Jaskier dramatic). But Geralt was only pretending he wasn’t ill, and Jaskier himself was admittedly tired and sore and hungry again. The bread and dried fruit they’d bought for lunch with their last orrens barely made a dent in it.
After a hard year, Jaskier and Geralt head up to Kaer Morhen for the winter to rest and recover. But they aren’t the only guests, and Jaskier rummages around in everybody’s closets until he finds the ghosts.

Summary
Geralt barely had time to throw up Quen.
The Sign flared, a dull gold shimmer, before the creature struck. The impact threw him back, the shield cracking like ice. Steel rang on talon. Feathers and fur filled his vision. The beast shrieked, a sound that clawed the air apart.
Jaskier’s shout was lost in the roar.
Geralt rolled, came up on one knee, slashed low. The blade met hide and bit shallowly — not enough. The griffin reared, blood spattering the snow, wings beating with hurricane force. Geralt’s hood was torn away.
Another strike — a flash of claws — and pain like fire seared across his ribs. He stumbled back, breath torn from him. Quen guttered and failed.

They have to learn how to cope with their new vessels, constantly dealing with each other's secrets and pain. They have no choice but to get to know each other, and as time progresses the curse gets stronger. Soon they find themselves behaving more and more like the other, experiencing each other's nightmares and then ultimately, reading each other's minds.

Jaskier is caught in a very familiar position when the mage curses him: in bed with a woman, his dark hair mussed and messy, his cheeks flushed deep red. The woman sits across from him in a similar state of disrepair, blinking dully up at her husband.
Or: Jaskier is cursed, shrunken to the size of a doll. Geralt protects the small bard as they track down the mage who did it. Jaskier does not make this easy (some of which is his fault; most of which is not).

Eskel cannot decide which is more embarrassing: that all of his brothers know that he’d gotten his ass handed to him by one of the larger bandit bands that plagued the Kaedwenian forests, or that Vesemir had declared his only remaining articles of clothing (which also happened to be among the few—emphasis on few—things that the bandits hadn’t taken from him) to have been damaged beyond repair—leaving him with a single pair of smalls, and the moth-bitten blanket Vesemir had pulled out from the bowels of the keep, to clothe him for the entirety of winter.
…Melitele, he wants to crawl underneath the nearest rock and die.

You’re just— just stuck here, and you don’t know why, and you really don’t want to leave, but you’re terrified you can’t leave, and— Well, who could blame anyone for being terrifying when you’re that fucking terrified—”
“Jaskier,” Geralt stops him, and Jaskier comes to a shuddering halt, chest heaving, face flushed with hectic colors, hands wringing together.
For a long moment, the two of them stare at each other. Geralt’s heart, normally so slow, feels like it’s racing, nearly the pace of a human’s, so fast it’s choking him.
“What happened?” Geralt asks him, throat tight.

When Lambert meets the werewolf on his way home, and recognizes him, the witchers are up for an interesting winter.

Or: Geralt never let the bard come truly close, but at the same time never imagined him truly gone. After he's left regretting his words at The MountainTM, he is presented with the bard cursed, and confronted with the result of his actions. Will the bard ever forgive him? And if he did, would that be enough to try and fix this?

In the aftermath of being tortured for talking too much, Jaskier can't bring himself to speak. Geralt sympathizes with the bard, after all there was a reason he was so taciturn himself. Questions were not so much encouraged at Kaer Morhen. And for a lot of his life he'd always figured that is how you train a boy or an animal: hit it when it doesn't do what you want. After all, that was how he ended up as good at monster slaying as he was. But when it actually came down to it, that wasn't how he trained Roach. And negative reinforcement implies, at least etymologically, the existence of an opposite.
