Summary
Is he one of her students' guardians? Or maybe an older brother? Rumi knows she's never seen this man before because she sure as hell would've remembered a face as gorgeous as this.
“Hi,” he greets, bowing deeply. “I’m Jinu. My sister's kind of shy, but she loves to sing, so I wanted her to have a good teacher.”
Oh. So not one of her students. Yet.
Or, Rumi, Jinu, and the life that waits just beyond the once-severed thread of fate.

Summary
"I'm happy you're here, you know that?" Rumi says. "Not just for me, but for you. I'm really glad you got a second chance."
"I am too," Jinu whispers. "I would've died for you. I came so close—"
She kisses his knuckles again, eyes stinging a little. "I know."
He speaks in a rush, as if worried that she won't let him finish. "I'm glad I didn't. I like being alive. But—you gave me something so important, I didn't know any other way to give you something back. I didn't feel like I had anything worth giving, except my life, and my soul—I've spent so long just hating myself, wasting it, but if I could've given it to you—"
"Jinu," Rumi says, "Jinu."
"You gave me my soul back," he says wetly, squeezing her hand. "And now... I'm doing my best to take care of it."
Or: Rumi's demon heritage, Jinu's newfound soul, Zoey and Mira's love that now has a safe place to land. Everything is gentle, and everyone lives.

Summary
“What are you doing here?” Rumi hisses, angry and stressed and hit by the exhaustion of her very long guilt-filled day all over again. She has so many questions to ask— demand, really— and Jinu humming pleasantly does not soothe her nerves.
“Was looking for you.” He says. His voice is… Slurring a bit. Not so badly that she can’t understand him but just enough to be noticeable. It makes Rumi’s eyebrows furrow, confusion overtaking everything else. “Was thinking of writing you a letter but… I needed to see you sooner.”
Some traitorous part of her flushes just a little at the admission before she shakes it off. Everyone wants to be wanted, it doesn’t mean anything if she’s flattered by it. Rumi has to steer her thoughts back on topic because Jinu is acting… Not normal.
(Or a few days after Rumi first proposes her plan to him, Jinu accidentally gets doused with ‘Cuddle Pollen’ and ends up on Rumi’s balcony, making it her problem. The need for physical proximity is one thing but Jinu is also noticeably in a… Different state of mind.)

Summary
Rumi adds, dismissively sweet, "Do you even know your way around a sword?"
A beat.
To his credit, Jinu isn't always predictable.
Between one blink and the next, Rumi throws her blade up with a harsh clang! as a curved hwando comes flashing towards her throat, wreathed in sickly pink fire and little more than a wicked blur in Jinu's hands that flings up a spray of discordant sparks where it clashes against her own, sending a hard jolt through her arms—and Jinu grins down at her over their crossed blades, the tip of a fang peeking out crookedly over his bottom lip.
"I don't know," he says, eyes dancing. "You tell me."
Or: Rumi discovers that Jinu can use a sword. They unlock a new dimension to their fighting-as-flirting strategy.

Summary
“You should let your hair down sometimes, Rumi.”
His claw now retracted, Jinu reached up with one hand and cradled her jaw. His thumb wiped a stray tear as he stroked her cheek gently, like she was a precious jewel, and she leaned into his touch. With his other hand, Jinu ran his fingers through her violet locks at the base of her neck, and Rumi tilted her head up, warmth spreading across her cheeks.
She couldn’t remember the last time someone touched her like this.
She never wanted him to let her go.
Her light brown eyes locked with his dark ones, and he leaned in closer, their foreheads nearly touching.
“As far as I’m concerned,” his gaze lowered to her lips, “you’re just as beautiful with the cracks showing.”
