"Fuck off, Rozanov," Shane spits out. The very last thing he needs is to be caught up in this weird dynamic Ilya keeps pushing on him.
Ilya grins this time, pleased with himself. “Ah-ah. This is exactly what I mean. So frustrated.” His hand moves in a dismissive gesture and lands on Shane’s chest, poking lightly. “Sex is a healthy way to get the anger out.”
“You would know, right? You’ve probably got a spreadsheet.” It's a petty deflection, they both know that. Ilya’s promiscuity wasn’t a secret to anyone, he wasn't ashamed of his lifestyle.
“It’s better than beating a guy’s face in,” Ilya says. The implication hangs heavy. The words drag Comeau’s bloodied, disfigured face into the space between them.
“Oh, spare me. You fuck anything that moves.” Sex is not some valve you opened to let pressure bleed out cleanly. It's not that simple. Never has been.
Or; Shane is traded to Boston after a brutal scandal with the Montreal Metros gets diffused on live tv.

The door bangs open.
Anger swiftly replaces his self-demolition. Ilya Rozanov is shutting the door behind him as if it’s expected for him to be there, like he and Shane discussed ahead of time to meet. His hands go into the pockets of his slacks when the door is closed, eyes cataloging the room with a detached casualness that makes Shane’s blood boil. He couldn’t even wait a second before coming to shit talk, could he?
“The fuck do you want?” Shane pushes himself off the counter, turning to face Ilya.
Ilya blinks at him like he’s surprised to see him. “Oh, well, I was waiting for you to leave so I could follow.”
“Seriously?”
“Yeah, I wasn’t sure you would get the hint if I got up first so I just waited for when you would inevitably run out to shit yourself.”
It's time for the Boston Conservatory of Dark Arts to elect a new prefect for the next year. The candidates are Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov, both elite witches of their class and both still not over the turbulent relationship that ended four years ago.

They used to swap places all the time as kids. At school, at the playground, at practice. For fun. It had been easy then—like a quick changing of jerseys between periods. That was before the invisible fork in the road that had inexplicably parted them in their teens. It's been over a decade since they’ve done this bit. And Shane doesn’t want to do it. Not because he can’t do it but because he is so, so tired of playing clean-up crew for Henry’s fuckups.
Shane hesitates, jaw tightening. Then he slowly exhales through his nose.
“Do you. Still have. The clip-ons.” Shane grits out.---
